I read some really bad clickbait the other day that asked why wear an analog watch in the digital age.

Even though it was poorly written (or AI-generated, hard to tell), it did make me think a little. I think more about my analog camera usage telegraphing more about me than my watch choice, and when you start wearing a watch you notice they come in five flavors:

  • I have an Apple watch and I don't care what you're wearing.
  • I have some other digital, smart, or fitness watch and don't care what you're wearing as long as you don't judge me about mine.
  • I have an analog watch and I'm mildly interested in your watch choice..
  • I don't wear a watch and don't understand why you do.
  • I have an expensive watch and I want you to notice.
Though I prefer analog watches, I would say that's partially due to my attraction to discarded tech, and partly due to the analog nature of the rising and setting of the sun and moon. But I'm not anto-digital or anti-smart, it's mainly that most digital watch designs are just really bad, like what's the least amount of effort I can put into this thing so you'll buy it for $10 at Walmart. And most smart watches just want to be cell phones.

I wish there were more creative energy being put into the digital watch space. I wish I had ludicrous money to throw at Ollee Watch to build something similar but more creative. #⌚

Boo. First run, threw in Journey's Escape (player was built in '89 seemed period-appropriate) and won't track well past track five or six, which is a shame because the audio quality is significantly better than the random Sony DVD player I'm currently using to play CDs. Really noticeable in the highs. #💿

Hopefully I have better luck with the watch. Picked up a Rip Curl Atom with a dead battery for $20 USD. Based on the interwebs, making some Aussie jealous at my score. #⌚ #OiOiOi
