Today is #WorldAIDSDay. As always: if you have questions about #HIV or #STD, I try to answer them as best I can. Important: there are no stupid questions on these topics.
Today is World AIDS Day. Andrea Teagle writes for @KnowableMag about the two trials that suggest "functional cures" may be within reach.
World AIDS Day
The theme for the 2025 observance is "Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response," focusing on resilience in the face of challenges and the importance of sustained political leadership and community efforts to end AIDS by 2030. The day's purpose is to raise awareness, end stigma, remember those lost to HIV/AIDS, and support those currently living with the virus.

I'm reflecting on my work, as I often do on #WorldAIDSday.
I don't think I've had one of my patients with HIV die in the last 12 months, even of unrelated causes, and just how lucky we are to live in a time when there is effective treatment and prevention.
So many people around the world lack access to treatment, and this year it's going to be the first backwards step in a good number of years.
But most of all, thinking of those who have lost partners, lovers, friends and family - especially in the old days when it was a regular occurrence.
Today is World AIDS Day, and for the first time since its inception in 1988, the U.S. government will not be commemorating it. Trent Straube from
POZ Magazine writes about the stats on HIV and AIDS, and the impact of the Trump administration. "Although new HIV rates have declined overall, progress is imperiled due to funding cuts and a hostile administration in the White House," writes Straube.

What would you say if I told you I’m HIV+?
I mean, I’m not, but I wonder what prejudices or concerns we hold onto when someone tells you they’re HIV+.
PrEP protects anyone (especially at-risk groups such as men who have sex with men) from contracting HIV, and can be taken ‘event-based’ or daily.
Or: properly treated, someone who has HIV can be ‘U=U’; ‘undetectable = untransmissable’. They can’t pass it on.

In 1987, the
Silence = Death poster was created by a New York-based group of artists to protest the U.S. government's inaction on the AIDS epidemic, which they saw as a result of government and societal silence.

On this #WorldAIDSDay I’m thinking about PEPFAR defunding.
“Forecasting models predicted that the current steep funding cuts could result in more than 14,051, 750 additional all-age deaths, including 4,537,157 in children younger than age 5 years, by 2030.”
