Some whale #linocut prints for #WorldWhaleDay! I’ve had the great privilege of seeing humpbacks and orcas (and other species) when working at sea. They seem as curious about us as we are of them. 🧵1/2
Admittedly, it was pretty neat to be able to sit out on the balcony of our room and see whales breaching in the distance. We were a little south of Juneau, Alaska.

Krill harvesting threatens whale recovery 🐋
Soaring human demand for #krill in the #SouthernOcean poses a challenge to the recovery of #whale species once hunted nearly to extinction. #Stanford researchers identify the growing food conflict and offer solutions.
Overlap between industrial krill fishing and foraging whales, such as the humpback whale pictured here, may threaten #BaleenWhale recovery around #Antarctica.

Blue whales fall silent due to starvation, seen as a warning of a collapsing #ocean #ecosystem.
🐋
Blue #whales are calling less than they used to... a strange and heartbreaking shift that scientists link to shrinking krill populations during marine #heatwaves. When these giants struggle to find enough food, they spend more time searching and far less time singing... a change that signals stress in both the animals and the ecosystem they depend on. 🐋

The world's only taxidermied blue whale, dating back to 1865 CE, is housed at the Natural History Museum in Sweden. However, due to an incident involving a couple having sex inside it, the whale's jaws are now only opened on special occasions.
