Update on #Minecraft with my sister: told her about how you can hold things in your off-hand by pressing F.
I also told her not to go in my mine because she could accidentally mess it up, but actually because it will only fuel her theory that I am autistic. This is called "branch mining" and it is a long-established technique for efficiently finding diamonds, thank you very much.
Minecraft with my sister update: we explored the continent's tiny patch of swamp and a bit of the large bamboo jungle covering much of the west coast. We found a panda and I fed it bamboo! I wanted to show my sister lush caves so we quickly found a cave opening and descended. We also came across an abandoned mineshaft, a dungeon, an amethyst geode, and a pink axolotl! However, I was absolutely not keeping track of where we were going, so when we wanted to resurface we were utterly lost. I have keepinventory on, so we jumped into a pool of lava and respawned at 0,0. I was getting vertiginous, so logged off. (1/2)
I'd given my sister the boat we used to get from our home village to the jungle, so after I logged off she decided to try circumnavigating the continent (which is larger than she thinks). Later, I got a panicked email that she was hopelessly lost thousands of blocks from home, with some attached screenshots of cool scenery seen along the way.
I sent her this map with my estimate of where she had gone, which helped her get home, an arduous journey that took over an in-game week, maybe two. Her bed "slipped into the arctic depths by accident" and was lost, forcing her to "push forward in the darkness over several nights, sometimes hacking through foliage without even being able to see what was underfoot", navigating only by F3 coordinates. Eventually, after "crossing an ocean for what felt like 20 minutes", she saw a line of torches she'd placed on a mountainside between the home village and her mine. She just emailed me, "honestly, I feel like I now completely understand how columbus thought he discovered asia when he really found the americas." (2/2)

my sister asked me to make her a "training waterfall" so she could practice going up them without falling off and dying
(The ground around it is waterlogged slabs so if she falls she won't take damage.)
anyway in lieu of taking a nap I have been meaning to talk about this little free casual game I've been playing as my "bored and have 2 minutes to kill" game, called Tessel (available on web and as an iOS/Android app). To my indignation it is in fact more than a mindless time-waster and I ended up learning about MATH!!! >:(
It is a simple game where there are multicoloured polygons that fit together, but you can only attach sides with the same colour. (There's also a custom mode where you can change the rules, number of colours, etc.) You get points for how many tiles a resulting colour block covers, and you only get a certain number of tiles (only a few are available to choose from per turn, but you can shuffle them as many times as you want). The game records your high score for each shape.

okay so I've mentioned this before on here, but I've been playing Minecraft since like 2011, when your typical Minecraft player was a 20something indie gamer. A few years in, you'd see an occasional post where they let, like, their kindergarten-aged kid/relative play Minecraft for the lols. Then gradually it turned into "haha my kid is better than me at Minecraft :S". And eventually it became a "kids' game" and posts like "help I just found this forum, my kid wants a Minecraft-themed birthday party what can I make" became common.
anyway just now I stumbled across a post from someone showing the eccentric way their dad plays Minecraft and just. It's come full circle. I'm going to go die of old age now.
