#ArtAdventCalendar Day 3 - Still one of the highlights of my summer--photographing a female (or juvenile) merlin in rural Alberta. This one let me get within about 6ft of her, and I have a couple close ups, but I love something about this one along the fence line.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 2 - Nuthatches are one of my favourite birds. I love their little honk; how they can move upside down on tree trunks; and, I especially love their little tongue sticking out when they have a seed in their mouth! This male looks proud of the snack he's procured.

A female white-breasted nuthatch is perched on an angle on a lichen-covered tree-trunk. She has a sunflower seed--still in the shell--in her beak, and you can just see her little tongue sticking out. This is identifiable as a female, because the stripe on top of her head is grey to match her wing/back feathers (the stripe on males is dark, almost black).

Larch and conifer trees line a rocky mountainside, dividing the photo in half diagonally. The slope of the mountain in the foreground is light-coloured glacial rock deposit. The mountain slope in the background is also mostly glacial rock, but is in shadow, and yields a nice contrast to the foreground. The larch trees pop out from the conifers they stand alongside in the middle, as they are lighter-coloured and also lit by the sun.

NGL, despite living in Northern Canada, and despite most of my camera work being outdoors, winter's not my favourite season--photographically or otherwise. So dark. So cold. So many layers of clothing!

Still, I continue to try and find the beauty in all seasons, and step outside my comfort zone. I will never call myself a "cold-weather photographer," but photos like this remind me that it's worth it sometimes to bundle up and get outside!
