A Soviet tank lies in the sand. In June 2020, the UAE-backed secessionist Southern Transitional Council (STC) wrested control of the island from the Saudi-backed internationally recognised government. The STC joined the government鈥檚 Presidential Leadership Council, but the UAE retains considerable military and economic influence in the archipelago
