I've said it before and I'll say it again: #CongestionPricing is too little, too late. It's even worse since Hochul watered down the fees.

But pedestrianizing huge portions of Manhattan? Now *that* is the shit!

https://www.fastcompany.com/91436737/how-mamdani-could-push-a-bold-redesign-of-new-yorks-streets

#BanCars #NYC #Mamdani

Mamdani wants to pedestrianize “vast swaths” of the new congestion pricing zone, along with streets near public open space and schools. It’s an ambitious vision, though not impossible. Paris has transformed even more radically than New York, turning a highway into park space, planting tens of thousands of parking spaces with trees, closing more than 100 streets to cars, charging SUVs extra to park, and making rush hour look more like Copenhagen, with streets filled with bikes. Other cities have also reshaped around pedestrians, like Barcelona, which now has several car-free superblocks.

The Money Speaks:

"New York’s #CongestionPricing plan raised $48.6 million in tolls during its first month, a strong start for the program that exceeded expectations and kept it on track to raise billions of dollars for the region’s decaying mass transit system."

"The Trump administration has ordered New York City to end its #CongestionPricing program by 21 March.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which is responsible for public transportation in the #NewYorkCity metropolitan area, and a New York bridge authority have filed suit to block the administration’s action."

"In its lawsuit, the #MTA asserts that Duffy does not have the right to revoke the agreement. It also says that he must conduct the same degree of environmental review to kill the program that the first Trump administration required when the program was originally proposed."

New York Is Going to Court to Defend Congestion Pricing

Trump called himself “king” and tried to kill the program, but it might not be so simple.

The fossil-fuel besotted Trump admin is trying to pull the plug on #CongestionPricing.

"Not long after the move to end the program, Mr. Trump posted on social media "CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!"

"We are a nation of laws, not ruled by a king. The MTA has initiated legal proceedings in the Southern District of New York to preserve this critical program. We'll see you in court," Hochul said."

"Although #CongestionPricing was incredibly unpopular during its long gestation, a majority of New Yorkers now support the program. In early February, six of 10 New Yorkers said that they thought Trump should keep the program and not kill it, according to a Morning Consult poll.

That matches a pattern seen in other cities that adopt congestion pricing, where most voters hate the program until they see that it successfully improves travel times and reduces traffic. "

A million cars have disappeared: What #NYC is like after one month of congestion pricing

" #CongestionPricing began on January 5. One month in, traffic is down, public buses are faster, and transit ridership is up.

[A caller to a radio show says] his wife has seen fewer delays every day. “She’s getting home earlier every night,” he said. “I mean, we love it.” "
