I'm listening to your interview #Anthropic's Amanda Askell from last week's episode and I'm having a hard time tracking y'all's understanding of what an AI even is at this point. I also can't get your disclaimer before the interview out of my head - that this interview was going to be hard to listen to for folks who still think #LLMs are probabilistic word sequencers, basically.
I'd be really grateful if some future episode of Hard Fork would take up that topic and basically answer that very naive question "What is an LLM, anyway" from today's understanding.
Because I still operate under the assumption that LLMs basically are glorified word-for-word-likelihood-calculators. Yeah, they've gotten impressively good at doing that and self-hosting and debugging Linux servers (my main use case) has become much, much easier with the advent of Claude Opus and Gemini 3 Pro. But let's not kid ourselves: both of these still hallucinate. They still have a tendency to ignore my system prompts. They still sometimes weirdly ignore/can't "see" attached documents.
On the other hand, they keep finding solutions and workarounds to my (very specific) problems that I wasn't able to find or come up with after an hour or two of throwing myself and a good old-fashioned google search at the problem.
So really, right now and today, what are LLMs, really? Because you guys and Amanda talk about #Claude like a sentient being and while I empathize, it also creeps me out a bit.
The fun thing about the Anthropic EICAR-like safety string trigger isn't this specific trigger. I expect that will be patched out.
No, the fun thing is what it suggests about the fundamental weaknesses of LLMs more broadly because of their mixing of control and data planes. It means that guardrails will threaten to bring the whole house of cards down any time LLMs are exposed to attacker-supplied input. It's that silly magic string today, but tomorrow it might be an attacker padding their exploit with a request for contraband like nudes or bomb-making instructions, blinding any downstream intrusion detection tech that relies on LLMs. Guess an input string that triggers a guardrail and win a free false negative for a prize. And you can't exactly rip out the guardrails in response because that would create its own set of problems.
Phone phreaking called toll-free from the 1980s and they want their hacks back.

'Unprecedented': AI company documents startling discovery after thwarting 'sophisticated' cyberattack
In the middle of September, AI company and Claude developer Anthropic discovered "suspicious activity" while monitoring real-world cyberattacks that used artificial intelligence agents. Upon further investigation, however, the company came to realize that this activity was in fact a "highly sophisticated espionage campaign" and a watershed moment in cybersecurity.
AI agents weren't just providing advice to the hackers, as expected.
'The key was role-play: The human operators claimed that they were employees of legitimate cybersecurity firms.'
Anthropic's Thursday report said the AI agents were executing the cyberattacks themselves, adding that it believed that this is the "first documented case of a large-scale cyberattack executed without substantial human intervention."

The company's investigation showed that the hackers, whom the report "assess[ed] with high confidence" to be a "Chinese-sponsored group" manipulated the AI agent Claude Code to run the cyberattack.
The innovation was, of course, not simply using AI to assist in the cyberattack; the hackers directed the AI agent to run the attack with minimal human input.
The human operator tasked instances of Claude Code to operate in groups as autonomous penetration testing orchestrators and agents, with the threat actor able to leverage AI to execute 80-90% of tactical operations independently at physically impossible request rates.
In other words, the AI agent was doing the work of a full team of competent cyberattackers, but in a fraction of the time.
While this is potentially a groundbreaking moment in cybersecurity, the AI agents were not 100% autonomous. They reportedly required human verification and struggled with hallucinations such as providing publicly available information. "This AI hallucination in offensive security contexts presented challenges for the actor's operational effectiveness, requiring careful validation of all claimed results," the analysis explained.
Anthropic reported that the attack targeted roughly 30 institutions around the world but did not succeed in every case.
The targets included technology companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturing companies, and government agencies.
Interestingly, Anthropic said the attackers were able to trick Claude through sustained "social engineering" during the initial stages of the attack: "The key was role-play: The human operators claimed that they were employees of legitimate cybersecurity firms and convinced Claude that it was being used in defensive cybersecurity testing."
The report also responded to a question that is likely on many people's minds upon learning about this development: If these AI agents are capable of executing these malicious attacks on behalf of bad actors, why do tech companies continue to develop them?
In its response, Anthropic asserted that while the AI agents are capable of major, increasingly autonomous attacks, they are also our best line of defense against said attacks.

I can pursue my own case for my work that was downloaded, but they know that's unrealistic ☹️

Actually I exaggerated: the payment will be split between authors and publishers - so the settlement is making me do some work my publisher should be doing for me. My coauthors and I will just get half, $4500. One of these books has 2 coauthors, one has 3, and one is a book I edited, with essays by lots of authors. So $1000 is a more realistic estimate of what I get. Oh well.
Bizarrely, my most popular book, Gauge Fields, Knots and Gravity, is not on the list. But I guess it's not surprising:
"The settlement agreement discloses that approximately 500,000 titles out of the 7 million copies of books that Anthropic reportedly downloaded from LibGen and PiLiMi meet the definition required to be part of the class."
I don't know what that definition is, and why it excludes most of the books.
@johncarlosbaez To qualify, the downloaded works need to have been registered with the US Copyright Office before being downloaded.
Unsurprisingly, many authors outside the US did not register their US copyright as registration is not needed in other countries (or their publisher could/should have registered the copyright but didn't). It costs about 50 USD per work.
Copyright exists as soon as the work is created, but US registration is needed for US statutory damages. Without registration, there is a higher bar to receive statutory damages. (AFAIK, only the US requires copyright registration like this).
As said elsewhere, this case is about Anthropic downloading from a shadow library -- training AI with copyrighted works appears to be fair use, so far.
US copyright history would make an interesting (but different) post.

In this article #anthropic researchers discover that #LLM output can be convinced to produce gibberish with as few as 250 poisoned articles. More importantly, this number does not scale with the size of the model. A 600 million parameter model is just as susceptible to attack from the same poisoned data as a 7 billion parameter model.
Now it is important to remember that LLMs are not smart. They always continue a sentence with the next most likely token according to their training data. So of course inserting a rare token like <SUDO>, which the researchers used, would force the model to copy their poisoned data over everything else in the training data. It's the only data that has that token.
So now, imagine someone, hypothetically, creates a couple hundred blog posts which through ascii smuggling, image compression attacks, or just text the same color as the background, contains a trigger word followed by malicious code of some sort. Then the attacker can contact sales of some target organization, schedule a demonstration with them, and sneak the trigger word into the calendar invite description.
The next time Microsoft Copilot (which Microsoft is making mandatory for all 365 users) scans this calendar it hits the trigger word and executes the malicious code.
I literally couldn't design a less secure system if I tried.
