Small pink Caladenia orchid variations near the Mongarlowe River, Monga, NSW. Some interesting variations in flower colour and size in roadside plants on the edge of tall forest. Most plants here are probably closer to C. carnea although C. fuscata is more common to the north around the village of Mongarlowe.

Purple Beard Orchid (Calochilus robertsonii) near Gipsy Point, East Gippsland, VIC.

The flowers are fairly small at this location but they generally feature some of the bushiest beards of the local Calochilus. Only saw the one plant out this year in a dry spring although there were some good patches of red beard orchids out not far away.

Crested sun orchid (Thelymitra x irregularis) near Genoa, VIC. This beautiful sun orchid is a natural hybrid between T. ixioides (spotted sun orchid) and T. carnea (pink sun orchid) - which were both also flowering at this location.

Was fortunate to see this rare orchid at several locations on my last East Gippsland day trip but there were only one or two plants out in any one place. One of my favourite sun orchids :)

First flying duck (Caleana major - large duck orchid) of the spring near Genoa, East Gippsland, VIC. Only a few scattered plants out in flower here but quite a few more of these very distinctive orchids in bud nearby - despite the recent dry conditions.

Dropped by Mongarlowe for a quick orchid scout last week on a trip to Braidwood, NSW. Thought it would be a nice change to see something different after working through fields of Thelymitra ixioides (spotted sun orchid) variations in East Gippsland ... and the first orchid spotted on the side of the road? Yep - Thelymitra ixioides ... again!

Some nice forms here - including some with larger spots (or no spots at all) which are maybe approaching Thelymitra juncifolia. Either way, I haven't seen either of these similar species here before, although usually only drop by later in summer / early autumn for the midge orchids.

Really nice compact pale blue form of Thelymitra ixioides (spotted sun orchid) in heathland near Genoa, East Gippsland, VIC.

Several of these plants with small flowers (and only three per plant) plus almost no spots were growing together on one side of the track with more typical forms (larger / bluer / more spotted flowers just starting to open) on the other side of the track. Tip of my little finger here for scale.
