Ouf. I came across a MacBook Pro mid 2012 edition that I had laying around. I had installed Linux Mint on it, but didn't remember the password and, hey, gotta have Gnome on a Mac, right? So I installed Fedora on it instead.
Turned out that Fedora does not recognize the wifi card in this machine! Linux Mint was connected, and had the Broadcom driver installed. But Fedora just says "No Wi-Fi adapter found" :/
Is there a list of distros with MBP Broadcom drivers?
I was sure that I could just connect via ethernet and install the Firmware app and then install the Broadcom firmware from there. But no, Firmware can not see the Broadcom chip!
But thankfully I found a guide on cyberciti.biz... Yeah, that sounds sketchy, but it worked! But it was a bit long, and Firmware still doesn't see the chip even now! So this is not ideal. Why is it so hard to install?
