@Em0nM4stodon @chris I don't think anybody expected Carney to turn right around and all of a sudden be a willing participant in the American hegemonic "sphere-of-influence" game.

We voted for "elbows up" and started talking about civil defense networks, and then a few weeks later Carney was canceling the Digital Services Tax.

Shame on me, I'm never trusting the Liberals again.

@Em0nM4stodon @chris people will say that the NDP being in the middle of a leadership race is a huge vulnerability with voting on a budget, but honestly can you imagine ALL of the leadership candidates hitting the campaign trail and bringing their constituency with them?

Every party is severely limited by the shortcomings of their one leader, but the #NDP could legitimately put together a Dream Team of cross-class potential leaders to support Don Davies.

@chris I seriously do not want another election, but if a single #NDP MP votes for this budget then they might as well just cross the aisle. This budget deserves to fail, and honestly it might be worth triggering another election.

The priorities of this budget are wildly misaligned with what voters signed on to when they elected the Liberals earlier this year.

CBC reporting that Elizabeth May has said she will be voting for the budget tonight. Which means the Liberals only need one more vote for it to pass, or for two MPs to abstain.

Seems unlikely we will have an election from this budget vote... but you never know!

The #NDP should vote against the budget, not abstain.

They should vote against it mainly onnthe basis that it requires balanced "operational spending", and only allows deficits for "capital spending".

Operational spending includes all program spending to individuals like CPP/OAS, EI, healthcare.

Capital spending excludes all spending to individuals.

That makes it OK to create money to give to large private capital firms, but forbids creating money to spend on healthcare.

@renatarocha I would be pleased if @pluralistic and fam were willing to rescue the federal #NDP from irrelevancy before the next Canadian federal general election. The leader of our "Liberals" is a right-of-Harris conservative, and the leader of our "Conservatives" is a much-less-ignorant wannabe Trump.

Jagmeet might be an effective lawyer, but the last NDP leader we had who effectively connected with and persuaded the public at large鈥攏ot just the party loyal鈥攚as Jack Layton. If we're ever to have a viable left-of-centre option again (where centre separates primacy of human rights, to its left, from primacy of property rights, to its right), we need a Canadian Sanders (but somewhat younger), Ocasio-Cortez, or Mamdani.
