575 years ago today Glasgow University was founded by Pope Nicholas V in a letter (known as a Papal Bull) dated 7th of January 1451. Sent at the request of King James II, this letter William Turnbull, the Bishop of Glasgow permission to add a university to the city's Cathedral. This makes it the fourth oldest university in the UK and the second oldest in Scotland, after St Andrew's University, from where Bishop Turnbull had graduated around 1420.
