... und dann ist da noch "Web 1.0 Hosting - Save the old Web!", was ich recht sympathisch finde 😊
"Web 1.0 Hosting - is an advanced static hosting with some predefined most necessary ready-made scripts, a smallweb project that makes it possible to access static websites from old devices such as retro computers, old operating systems, palmtops, and cellular phones as part of an initiative to save the old web and support the smallweb movement. Hosting of modern websites and the use of modern technologies are also permitted. There is also a search engine, web mail and web chat, working on both modern and legacy systems.

@moderation Question for mods & admins out there - does anyone host their own <whatever> as a sandbox/playground, and what's your architecture for doing this? I want few and invitation-only collaborators to multiple AP-social web applications that we can experiment with as mods/admins as we design and refine community proposals.
Primary needs are:
- Accessible outside the walls of my living room/relatively stable (eg, doesn't go out if the power does, OTOH, I'm making no uptime promises .. 1/?
There used to be a number of webhosts in datacentres located in Waterloo Region. Some have consolidated, some have shut down, but there are at least a couple left, used by @kwlug, one for their webhost and one for their BigBlueButton server.
Since you want to do F/LOSS hosting anyway, you could join the KWLUG mailing list ask the question there. They're a pretty knowledgeable crowd.

We need some suggestions!
A friend has a non-profit association and they use Google Sites as their website where they publish their calendar, events, photos, etc.
We would like to suggest a European alternative to Google Sites, but it has to be:
- free
- no-code
- easy (for a 70 year old non-tech-savvy admin)
- not just one landing page: there are many categories of information, one page for each)
- no need for fancy design, their current Google Site is text heavy
We only know paid solutions, self-hosting or free one-page website, so it doesn't help.
If there isn't a European solution, a non-Google option might be okay.
Any recommendations?
It runs locally, and can upload the website pages and assets to many remote storage solutions, including FTP, SFTP, S3, and Git.
For the hosting part, you can find many user-respecting, privacy-focused, and EU-based providers on the CHATONS collective website: https://www.chatons.org/.

Recommendations please!
What's a good domain name registration company?
Specifically for:
* UK resident (this doesn't mean the registrar should be UK based, it may actually mean the opposite! I'm not sure)
* Personal websites
* cheap and doesn't hike prices on renewal
* OK for privacy and security
* not a reseller
I don't need hosting, just domain transfer/registration.
thanks!

EDIT TL:DR for those who can't/won't read the full thread - the answer depends very much on what tld you are registering - as different registrars are subject to different upstream prices for any given tld.
A registrar charging more is not necessarily profiting more, they may just be being charged more by the registry, or be using a wholesaler/middleman for admin convenience.
It also depends on how price sensitive you are and whether consolidating domains with disparate tlds to one trusted registrar is worth a price penalty to you.
