A thoughtful Truth and Reconciliation Day to all in this place called Canada. 🍁

May we collectively pause and consider what has happened, what continues, and what must happen in future to be better.

The past is still very very present here in Nuuchanulth territories.

The last buildings of the old Christie IRS on Meares Island near Tofino will be demolished October 9th. Survivors are invited to witness and/or participate. Link to news story below.

The water looks flat, but there are small waves going into the beach. On the shore above the beach is a collection of buildings. They look steer. The sky is gray cloud cloudy.

The Waterloo police are all over social media saying how they have an orange squad car to spread awareness about truth and reconciliation. Truth is, I did not go to the event today because their presence disturbs me.

Last year, when I did go, the cops were the very first people thanked for being there. It felt like a gut punch. This is not ok. The police do not make me feel safe. They make me go into high-alert mode.

A few years ago, I stopped three Waterloo police officers from abusing a disabled woman. I heard screams for help and came running only to find them dragging her across the parking lot of the police station. She was not violent. She was not resisting. She was being assaulted. Her shirt was half off and her shoulder was dislocated. I didn't know what to do, but got out my phone to record. They let go of her as soon as they saw me with my phone. I stayed there until the woman got away. I made sure she was safe, and then I left, never turning my back on them.

The same year, an elder I know at Six Nations texted me in a panic because police were shooting at her and other Indigenous women with baton rounds.

Police presence at Indigenous events is not reconciliation. It is a threat dressed up as a photo op. It is a reminder of how police were integral to Indigenous children being stolen and placed in residential "schools."

It's been 10 years since the report of the #TruthAndReconciliation Commission came out. Just a reminder that I've converted the Executive Summary PDF into HTML and plain text for easier reading here: https://nev.codeberg.page/trc/

Establishing Truth and Reconciliation Day was one of the Commission's Calls to Action: https://nev.codeberg.page/trc/calls-to-action.html#commemoration

Consider this when you think of all the tourists that go to Tofino and the West Coast. One of the most famous resorts, Tin-Wis Best Western Resort.

“Old Christie, as it was commonly known, closed in 1971 and the children were moved to a new complex located at the site of Tin Wis Best Western Resort, in Tla-o-qui-aht traditional territory. New Christie Residence closed in 1983, making it the last of the Indian Residential Schools in the province of British Columbia.”

Most of the tourists have no idea the trauma that occurred there.

Strength and healing to all survivors and their families today, and every day. 🧡

And by coincidence the AV News is running this impactful story of personal reconciliation for an Indigenous woman who is now a manager at the Tin-Wis Resort.
