I need to get a proper YT proxy front-end going (I might install my own Invidious, but we'll see)
I am slowly switching EU-based services where possible, but it's not a requirement.
I currently have some availability for an additional freelance client.
I've been doing #ruby since 2004 or so, and #rails since v1.
I'm also reasonably competent in #JS/#TS (more BE than FE), #python, and #go. If FP is your thing, I can do #elixir, #gleam, or #ocaml, though of the three, I only used Elixir (Phoenix) in production.
All that said, almost all of my recent contracts were for Fractional CTO/Engineering Lead roles.
If any of that sounds interesting, HMU.
I think I'm headed for a major depression/burnout. Working with my current client is extremely frustrating on several levels.
But whenever I look for something else, the projects/companies seem dumb/wasteful/hype-driven, or don't align with my personal values.
And in the rare case I find something interesting, they are not open to fully remote work (at least from my timezone), especially for someone who would prefer not to work full-time, something I haven't done in over 6 years.聽
There's one mystery in freelance consulting/fractional CTO work I never could quite figure out: why do people pay a lot of money to then (mostly) ignore what I tell them? You do you, I guess. I get paid either way. It's just that my desk is starting to show heavy signs of use from the constant head impacts.
Is there a more user hostile behavior than having an "AI" customer supoport chat bot?
Me: I want to do X.
Bot: Sure, you can do X from your account settings.
Me: Hmm, I don't see an option to do that there.
Bot: You're right, you can't do that.
Me: So why tf did you say I can?
Bot: I see how that can be confusing.
I eventually found a way to actually open a support ticket. I made sure to include some feedback regarding the bot.
"[An] Internet radio station playing the top tracks from the /r/vintageobscura sub-reddit."
Perfect when you're in the mood for some obscure music.
What are some languages you really like/respect, but rarely get a chance to use (anymore)?
"This Is How Much Anthropic and Cursor Spend On Amazon Web Services"

This quote really got me: "Anthropic Spent At Least 126.5% of Its 2024 Revenue On Amazon Web Services In 2024"
Be a CTO, they said, it's gonna be fun, they said. Yet here I sit in front of Google Docs and Sheets, writing tech strategies and roadmaps instead of sitting in front of an editor and writing code.
I love discovering niche instances (Some of them being single user instances) that are running forks of #Mastodon or using #Pleroma, #snac, #Sharkey and #IceShrimp - Love to see it.
