I paused reading @cstross 's Regicide Report (I wonder how many searches for "stross regicide" it takes before Google puts him on a list?) this evening to watch The Abominable Dr Phibes (1971) which I last watched much closer to its release date than to today.

That was a good day. Through to Edinburgh to pick up a copy of @cstross latest 'The Regicide Report' from Transreal Fiction, pint in Greyfriars Bobby's Bar (full of tourists, to no-ones surprise) and a tour around the Edinburgh Hacklab.
Now devoured said book. Makes a suitably semi-apocalyptic ending to the Laundry Files. And I need to go and read up on Operation BARMAID, which is a bit of Cold War insanity I hadn't heard of...

“(There are many (many (nested)) parentheses: ritual magic, realtime spell-casting, hasn’t been the same since John McCarthy.)”
– Charlie Stross, The Apocalypse Codex
(Yep, I’m rereading the #LaundryFiles by @cstross as a refresher for #TheRegicideReport)

I just gulped down #TheRegicideReport in 24 hours! It was very epic and satisfyingly ties a lot of plotlines and characters from the previous #LaundryFiles books together.
However, it has left me a bit melancholy. I guess I was hoping that @cstross would have some fresh ideas on how to definitively deal with monsters who have taken over your government and are indiscriminately killing people to further their own selfish goals. You know, topical advice.

I have the sequel "Homeland" on my TBR pile too. Scarily prophetic for what is happening in USA right now. Maybe not great for hopeful escapism altho I expect a survivable ending cos the next in the series "Attack Surface" has some of the samecharacters.
For weirder escapism I'm also reading Merchant Traders series by Charles Stross @cstross
https://www.goodreads.com/series/40515-the-merchant-princes
They're portal fiction unlike the James Bond on a budget meets Lovecraft + Brit bureacracy of the #LaundryFiles. The latest ones in the New Management phase may appeal
https://www.goodreads.com/series/335314-the-new-management
Or the lighter UK X files but police and magic and nicer #RiversOfLondon series by Ben Aaronovitch in #books and comics
https://www.goodreads.com/series/51937-rivers-of-london
I also read cosy mysteries like Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club series.
https://www.goodreads.com/series/299267-thursday-murder-club
And for total escapism, Georgette Heyers' historical romances. Try The Grand Sophy
