#TechIsShitDispatch #Amazon
For days I've been trying to figure out what concrete steps I could take to help the protestors and observers in Minneapolis from afar.
Yesterday, I finally got an answer: there's a group buying and installing car dashcams for observers, and they have an Amazon wishlist. I don't like to do business with Amazon, but this is a good thing to make an exception for. (1/8)

It's been more than a year since #Debian #Linux deprecated the insecure #SHA1 hash algorithm in #APT repositories.
The #Keybase, #Slack, and #Dropbox repositories (I'm sure among others) are still using SHA1, and therefore for over a year they have not worked in Debian without changing the default APT policies to allow them.
I know Slack knows about this, because I told them. A year ago.
Why haven't they upgraded the security on their repository?
Seriously, wtf?

Progress bars that lie should be a crime. My macOS system update has been stuck at "About 5 minutes remaining" for "Preparing macOS Tahoe 26.2..." for about 15 minutes now.

Apropos my #TechIsShitDispatch threads…
If you are involved in any way with building #software, and you care about quality, for God's sake, give your users a way to submit feedback.
Not a support ticket or a net promoter score survey or an AI chatbot.
It should be a prominent "go here to tell us what we got wrong" contact method whose responses people actually read and pay attention to.
Your users are your biggest QA team, why aren't you using that?

If you read my #TechIsShitDispatch threads, you know that I feel passionately that tech should be better. But I don't blame the people forced to put up with the bad tech. That would be blaming the victims. These are systemic issues, and they require systemic solutions. Some rando throwing his iPhone off a bridge isn't going to do shit to fix what's broken.

If you read my #TechIsShitDispatch threads, you also know that I spend time every single day, sometimes hours, dealing with all the broken tech I encounter in my life. I do that for three reasons: (1) sometimes the work I do helps other people, and living a life of service is literally my prime directive; (2) I'm a stubborn cuss who often can't resist the challenge of fixing something that's broken and making it better; and (3) some of that shit is just too annoying to tolerate.

I am not saying it's impossible to live a life free of Microsoft, Apple, and Google. I'm saying it's Too. Fucking. Hard for most people.
We're all just trying to survive in a world that is stacked against us. We're all just trying to get by and do the best we can.
We have to continue exist within the system while we try to repair it.
