I highly recommend Dr. Elisabeth Glassco's site 400 Years. It focuses on Black history, Black resistance and solidarity, with an eye to contemporary events that call for resistance including political ones.

Her essay yesterday about Andrew Jackson and other founders of the American Republic is first-rate.

In Part 2 of “Sick in a Hospital Town,” we look at how a century-old community hospital in Albany, Georgia, became the only hospital in town — and grew into a sprawling health care system by waging a yearslong battle to eliminate its competition.

"We may not all be equally guilty. But we are all equally responsible for building a decent and just society."
- Ruby Bridges

On this day in 1960, Ruby Bridges walked into a New Orleans school and sparked change that still shapes classrooms today.

Wow! This is doing numbers, so let us add that if you are looking for resources to teach about Civil Rights and Black History (in the US and around the world), and/or if you enjoy international award-winning films that center Black stories, we recommend our Black History Collection.

Our educational resources are all free and they can be used across the curriculum. Many of the films stream for free as well!

Rebel Hearts tells the remarkable story of the the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In 1960s Los Angeles, they bravely stood up to the patriarchy of the Catholic Church, fighting for equality, their livelihoods, and their own freedom against an all-powerful Cardinal who sought to keep them in their place.

From marching in Selma in 1965 to the Women’s March in 2018, they put their bodies and their vocation on the line to fight for social justice. Their bold acts of faith, defiance and activism turned the Church upside-down, helping to reshape our society in ways that continue to resonate today.

TL:dr - Just watch it. You'll thank us.

Edit: We've added the Rebel Hearts trailer, which cracks our heart open in the best way.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) is a celebration of Black Joy, Black Excellence, and Black Activism.

This Oscar-winning documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson examines the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, and its line-up of iconic Black musicians and activists of the 1960s. The soundtrack is 🔥!

You can grab our free film guide to learn more about the historical context of the film, too.
