Today in Labor History December 25, 1831: The Great Jamaican Slave Revolt, the largest slave uprising in the British West Indies, began on this date. Samuel Sharpe, a black Baptist deacon, led the revolt of 60,000 enslaved people. The 11-day uprising began as a General Strike, but quickly turned violent. 14 whites and 207 enslaved black people died in the siege. However, another 340 rebels were executed afterward. The rebels had been inspired by the abolitionist movement in London and had intended to call for a peaceful uprising. The rebellion was depicted in Andrea Levy's 2010 novel, “The Long Song,” and in Herbert de Lisser’s The 1929 novel “The White Witch of Rosehall.”

Als eerbetoon aan Cliff (1944–2025) organiseert Caribbean Creativity een speciale vertoning van The Harder They Come (1972) op zaterdag 20 december in Melkweg Cinema. Het evenement ondersteunt de hulpinspanningen voor de slachtoffers van Hurricane Melissa, waarbij alle opbrengsten naar de getroffen gemeenschappen in Jamaica gaan. My student herself is ok (though it’s been tough), but the place where she stays in the Blue Mountains is completely cut off due to landslides and a collapsed road and bridge. Many people’s coffee crops completely desteoyed, too.
She has set up a fundraiser with local friends to rebuild the bridge. It would be lovely if #ClimateDiary could contribute a little!

Starting to see pretty terrible scenes from Jamaica as news slowly trickles out. Complete devastation in the western part of the country (Negril, Montego Bay, Black River). Not much in the way of images yet. But descriptions of forests levelled by the wind and turned into sticks.
Hoping it's not as bad as it seems, but people have perished and are missing.
Sending all the love and support to all Jamaicans! And those impacted in Cuba, DR, and Haiti too!
