Kagoshima on Kyushu is often compared with its Italian sister city Naples due to a similarly mild climate, relatively hot-tempered inhabitants and the presence of Mt. Sakurajima, an active volcano.

The name “Rokkakudo” refers to the distinctive hexagonal shape of the temple’s main hall, best seen from above (from an adjacent tall building).

On street level, the fairly compact temple grounds provide for a pleasant and quiet stroll in an urban setting.

There is an adjacent Starbucks that has temple-facing seating inside, or you can just enjoy the view of the main hall through the shop windows.
