Discord alternatives that I use and like:
IRC: been using it since 1994, it still exists and has continued to work fine the entire time https://libera.chat/ I pay for IRCCloud as my primary client, but use irssi as well.
Zulip: tried this out last year as an alternative to Slack. The threading/topics model takes a bit of adjustment, but it's a pretty smooth experience overall. https://zulip.com/

Just realised that #Zulip (a #Slack equivalent) is on Mastodon!
Have you tried it, if so do you like it? I'm thinking that #NeuroMethods could maybe move there (at some point in future)...

As for Discord, apart from them being part of the USA-based surveillance-industrial complex, their original set-up was great, as Discord was a very light web-app, but the latest versions have become so fat, that they cause browser crashes when trying to use other websites at the same time.
Using googledocs at the same time, as Discord doesn't work, so it means that they have broken the original reasons for using them... 🤦

AerynOS 2025.12 ISO release and update blog post

It's been a busy period for the AerynOS team with updates across the board including a number of "back end" changes as well.
We have implemented a new server, changed to Zulip for our instant messaging platform and changed our email provider all whilst continuing to land package updates including KDE Plasma 6.5.4 and Cosmic Beta 9. We have fixed a number of bugs and started landing new features.
Next up is our Versioned Repositories work which will enable big changes to our capabilities in 2026!

Hello there. My group has been using (free) Slack for chatting among ourselves. We are ~20 ppl in 3 locations, so chat has to work.
We want to move, but whereto? We consider #NextCloud Talk, #Mattermost, or #Zulip. We are fine with #selfhosting. It must be #opensource. We just need the chat, not integration with video or other advanced features.
What are you using? Where would you move to (and why)?
