Established in 1854, the London Necropolis Railway aimed to relieve pressure on overcrowded city churchyards by whisking the dead out to Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey. Its station, near Waterloo, featured a steam-powered coffin lift & a glass roof so no shadow would be cast on the hearse carriage. Nearby railway arches acted as mortuaries and coffins were kept in stock so guests dying unexpectedly in hotels could be discreetly removed. The station contained many waiting rooms, in which funeral services could be held, and customers could purchase first, second and third-class funeral packages. The service wound down after World War II, but the station office building can still be seen on Westminster Bridge Road. #WyrdWednesday #history #gothic #folklore #architecture #death #weird #trains #railway #London #psychogeography #graveyard

A loosely-themed seaside picture today. I'm often astonished by things I see on the beach. I cannot begin to imagine what ancient forces and events combined to produce such beautiful marbling, but then I'm not any sort of geologist...

Here's an example of another popular trend from the last few years that I rather fail to see the point of. Still, at least this collection of rusting padlocks isn't cluttering up the railings of a bridge...
On my walk in East London yesterday, I came across this view. I'm thinking wall advertising, ancient and modern...

One of the reasons I love the #Barbican because it's such a psychogeographically distinct 'realm'.
The City has old, modern & semi-modern all nestled uneasily side by side, whereas the Barbican is a #brutalist nautilus which crawled into #London out of the murky Thames.
And one that has built a strong shell around itself, to keep the shifting tides of the City at bay. (Sure, a few little old things reside within. But they know which decade is in charge here…)

I'm in no way a steam buff, but I was walking by the river a couple of weeks ago when I spotted a couple of blokes waiting patiently with their cameras. This is what they were waiting to see - and who doesn't like a steam train in the winter sunshine, even if it is a rather hackneyed image?

Here are some windows in Krakow for my first #FensterFreitag offering of 2026. I was mystified as to why the bollards don't line up with the doorway...
Hier sind einige Fenster in Krakau für meinen ersten #FensterFreitag im 2026. Ich war verwirrt, warum die Poller nicht mit der Türöffnung übereinstimmen...

The view over Krakow from Wawel Castle. The glass is so old, it distorts the world in an interestingly impressionistic way.

This time last year, we were visiting Vienna. We loved it there, and this week's #FensterFreitag offering can serve as a 'reflection' on that trip.
