And it's out!
Zack Whittaker and I have released our report on the pilot survey we conducted to increase awareness about threats security researchers and journalists who report on cybersecurity and cybercrime experience.
We are grateful to all those who responded to the survey and shared a bit of their experiences. Based on what we found in a pilot survey with a non-random sample, I really think we need to do a bigger study that can also do a deeper dive into some questions.
You can read the report in html or download the .pdf version:
pdf: https://databreaches.net/wp-content/uploads/security-researcher-journalist-threats-survey-2026.pdf
In conjunction with the release of the report, I've also added a new "Threats" category to DataBreaches.net.
You can also read some overview comments from Zack at

It’s been over a decade since Alaska significantly increased its funding for public education.
Two school districts are now suing the state for what they say is a long-running failure to give students a “sound basic education.”

A teacher called over a dozen therapists to find mental health care following a miscarriage.
An EMT spent months looking for one after a suicide attempt.
They couldn’t find any in-network provider able to see them. Now they're suing their insurer.

Lawsuit Alleges That WhatsApp Has No End-to-End Encryption
A lawsuit filed in San Francisco alleges that #WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption contains backdoors allowing #Meta employees to access user messages in real-time.
According to the complaint, internal tools allow engineers to view chats by User ID without a separate decryption step, bypassing the Signal Protocol protections the app claims to use.
The lawsuit cites £whistleblowers who claim that workers can request access to specific accounts via internal tasks, gaining unlimited temporal scope to a user's history, including deleted messages. Meta has labeled these claims false and absurd.
Technical experts note that while the Signal Protocol itself is mathematically secure, the integrity of end-to-end encryption relies entirely on the security of the endpoints. Potential vulnerabilities in WhatsApp include unencrypted cloud backups, metadata collection, and the fact that the client software is closed-source.
Without the ability to audit the code or verify public keys through an independent directory, users must trust that the application is not exfiltrating plaintext data before it is encrypted for transit.
The legal action highlights the ongoing tension between corporate privacy marketing and the technical reality of centralized messaging platforms. If the allegations of an internal "widget" for message access are proven true, it would represent a fundamental breach of the encryption standards Meta has advertised since 2016.

There are many ways that #WhatsApp could implement methods for getting users' messages while still using #EndToEndEncryption. The #mobile app could take a command to send messages to #Meta before they are encrypted (via an #E2EE channel still). This is why #FreeSoftware and #OpenSource are essential for #privacy. Anyone can then inspect what the app is actually doing. #Proprietary #software means blinding trusting the developer's claims.
