The beautiful circular sanctuary held over 1,000 worshippers and supported the area's Jewish community as it grew to its peak in the 1930s and 1940s. It closed in the 1990s, as families moved away to more suburban areas as the town's industry declined and urban regeneration plans failed.

The disused zoology department, somewhere in England 🐷🏫

Closed in the late 2000s, it was recently stripped out with renovation plans underway. Seemingly, these plans have been paused leaving the buildings future uncertain. So glad I got in and took photos before all this was thrown in the skip 😱

Looking at some of the people I followed early on, a lot of them were last active in 2023 and 2024.

It feels like looking at archives from old chats, or folks who have moved on from this realm for social media with more sticking power.

The fediverse is my only connection to social media, so this is it. No being distracted by the new shiny “everybody’s gonna be there.”

I’m here for the long haul…getting from there to here (sorry, couldn’t resist).

🚡🇬🇪 High above a Georgian mining town, rusting cable cars hang motionless on their lines. Built to carry miners and ore across the mountains, these small metal cabins were nicknamed "metal coffins" by the those that once used them for their daily commute.

Nowadays, the cable car network is under renovation. But, some relic cars and Soviet Modernist stations can still be explored.

🆕🏛️🇬🇪 New location feature: Sanatorium Iveria, #Georgia

Sanatorium Iveria is one of the many ruins in Tskaltubo, the former Soviet spa town in western Georgia. Grand staircases connect the floors, the walls are painted a stunning cobalt blue. One wing still holds the remains of a small performance space, suggesting the sanatorium’s dual purpose as both a medical and culture house.

🏛️🇬🇪 A grand Soviet-era culture house lies abandoned in the mountains, built in the 1950s as a venue for workers’ collectives. Its facade carries the influence of Greek architecture, with a portico entrance and classical lines that set it apart from others of its kind.

Once a theatre, cinema, and library, today it stands empty, its halls silent and its stage long unused.

Nature is always waiting in the wings to reclaim what we have taken. When we abandoned our buildings, or discard an old car in a forest, it isn’t long before vegetation colonises what we have left behind.
