You can have a gendered name and be nonbinary.

Also, women and men can have names that may be surprising for their gender.

It's even normal for the gender associated with a name to change over time.

Just do what you want with your name.

How much care do you take in choosing your character's names? I'm currently digging through great women in history for my Desolation #SciFi series, as most of the characters are female. Do you have a naming scheme?

#AmWriting #writing#WritingCommunity #names#Roman

Roman warriors approach a strange person.
"Halt, Strange Person! Where are you from?"
"I come from the future! What are you names?"
"My name is Quintus as I'm the fifth child in my family. My comrade is Sextus for he was the sixth child in his family. What is your name?"
"My name is Liv."
Guard counts on his fingers. "Jesus fucking Christ."

"Who the Fuck is Alice?" is a song that gets brought up around me a lot (particularly when being introduced to someone).

I once dated a woman named Eileen, and guys would sing "Come On Eileen" at her.

I knew a Jenny when I was younger, and everyone sang "8675309" at her.

Who else has a (perhaps unfortunate) reference to their name? Maybe everyone can get it out of their system in the comments and we can all just point them here in the future.

the evolution of chinese names in singapore: https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/community/whats-in-a-name-local-author-traces-the-evolution-of-singaporean-chinese-names

unlike *most* of my millennial peers, i have my passport chinese name NOT in mandarin / pinyin but in my dialect (teochew / chiu chow) name. i used to be ashamed of this (this was perceived to be deeply backward, in a time of mandarin hegemony and death to other chinese languages), but now i am very proud of it.
