Ugh. This is such a stupid #password dialog for #Dell #idrac.

If you have less than 8 characters, it tells you to use "at least 8". If you have 8 characters, it is happy. If you type 9 characters it tells you that you have too many characters.

You must have exactly 8. No more. No less.

okay, I found where past me got stumped last time with this box:

`echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo`

this fails when run as root in Debian 13, even with Secure Boot disabled, Kernel Lockdown disabled, etc.

in dmesg there's a message

intel_pstate: Turbo disabled by BIOS or unavailable on processor

this is because the #Dell BIOS is disabling turbo due to running on a "non-genuine" power adapter. I was able to work around this in Debian 12 but so far the same tricks aren't sufficient in Debian 13.

ok that made #dell just come off the list of potential sources like forever 👀😬

I have bought a Dell Latitude E6430 laptop, sight unseen. These are about 12-13 years old now. They have an unusual rubbery sort of surround around the keyboard, which doesn't stand the test of time as well the rest of the machine. On this laptop, it has become sticky, I assume as the "rubber" breaks down. It feels unpleasant to rest your hands on as you type - as if you are touching a dissolved sweet or something.
Any thought on how I may rejuvenate this, either by rejuvenating the surface, or by covering it up, maybe with some sort of coating?
I don't think I can pass this one on as intended, unless I improve the "feel" of it. #Dell #laptop

I’ve been gifted an old Dell server and I have no idea what to do with it. It’s got more compute than I know what to do with when compared to my laptop running proxmox. Any suggestions are welcome.

I haven’t booted it yet to confirm but from memory it’s got the following:

8x 240GB SSD

90GB RAM

2 Intel Xeon’s (not sure of the core count)

I think the #Dell Latitude’s are swell looking, the Thinkpad’s as well (even if they’re a bit overrated).

Needs an IPS display and should be below 15”. Should preferably not be more than 5–7 years old or so. I need some performance for photo editing on the go.

Should run Linux/Fedora well. I don’t want to mess around with Wi-Fi card drivers, so there should be support for that in the kernel.
