As we end the week, there is one correspondence I cannot forget.
Elon Musk has been making money from Starlink being used in the Ukraine war since February 2022. And through all this time, Russians have been using Starlink to coordinate their invasion, their bombing of cities, their killing of civilians.
And now, after 1440 days of making a profit off of Russian Starlink terminals — after countless Ukrainians have been killed — he casually turns off the Russian terminals.
I am lost for words.
@randahl 🧐This person #Musk is known for many things incl'g:
1) selling #EVs with #defective door handles tt resulted in #deaths (many fiery) of >=15 innocent folks;⚰️
2) selling #SpaceX rockets tt experts argue are physically infeasible & yet earned billions of $ of #taxpayer-funded government #subsidies & #contracts;💸
3) buying #twitter & turning it into an #XGrok cesspit of child & female sex #exploitation content; etc., etc.🤦♂️
In a normal country, such a person would've been incarcerated, no?🇺🇸
Then there’s the #tech companies — #Google, #Apple, #Microsoft, #Amazon, & #Meta.
The tech companies themselves have been awfully quiet about the project they’re helping to underwrite. Just to make sure they hadn’t missed it, MJ sent a photo of the demolished #EastWing — & requests for comment — to representatives of all of these companies. A Microsoft spox confirmed the company had made a contribution but offered no further comment. None of the others responded.
But #BigTech’s donations for #Trump’s pet cause come at a time when the industry’s giants have a lot riding on their relationships with the #WhiteHouse. In a marked shift from Trump’s first term, #tech leaders have spent most of the last 12 months singing the president’s praises as they navigate #antitrust cases, #tariffs, & #regulatory hurdles; fight for #contracts; & push for #policies that benefit their bottom lines.
As the admin seeks to fulfill #Trump’s pledge to carry out the largest #deportation op in #US history, attys for the men say their clients — #Afghans who fear retribution from the #Taliban for their work assisting the US in its 20-yr war in #Afghanistan — have found themselves in the crosshairs of #ICE. The attys provided WaPo with #military #contracts & certificates, #asylum & #visa applications, recommendation letters & other records that described both men’s work on behalf of #USmilitary….
One former interpreter for US forces in #Afghanistan was detained by ICE agents in Connecticut last month after he showed up for a routine green card appointment. A second was arrested in June, just minutes after attending his first #asylum hearing in San Diego.
