#Fedideck - I am loving what I am seeing so far, but one thing I would like is to be able to adjust the width of the columns. I really only like to use 3, and that leaves almost half the window blank, and the 3 columns very narrow. Or am I missing something? #ZenBrowser 1.17.15b (Firefox 146.0.1) on MacOS 14.8.3
I can't find much information about the organisation behind @zenbrowser and how they make money, though. Google AI overview (the one added on top of search results) claims they've got aquired by Atlassian and sells AI tools, but I know better than to trust these summaries.
Honestly, with all the banger marketing @Vivaldi is doing on the #fediverse, I am considering trying it out as a daily driver.
Using #ZenBrowser (based on #Firefox with the decentralized sync feature) is somewhat of a boon though. Plus, I've gotten used to container tabs and workspaces in Zen.
But I am considering it still...
The TOS debacle last spring was a warning flag as to Mozilla's future direction, and I started checking out some of the projects that build browsers on top of the current Firefox codebase. My top three: Librewolf focuses on privacy, Waterfox clears out the cruft, and Zen tries to create a "calm" internet experience similar to Arc.
Interestingly, all three of them have made statements about in-browser "AI" in the last couple of days:
we haven't and won't support "generative AI" related stuff in LibreWolf.
Zen currently is disabling all AI features included in Firefox and will continue to do so.
Waterfox's stance on AI in the browser
And I wasn't even looking for those statements!
Quick PSA : yes, #Mozilla has been disappointing, but so far, they’re the only organization preventing Google to have a full control over web standards. Blink/WebKit-based browsers (Chromium, Vivaldi…) do NOT help at all in that regard.
So please use #Firefox or a #Gecko-based alternative ( #ZenBrowser, #LibreWolf…). Ride the nightly release train and report bugs if you can. #Servo is getting ready, but for the next ~5 years, Gecko is our only suitable option.
I already moved away from #Firefox a while ago as I wanted to try #ZenBrowser. It's been great, but with the recent flood of Firefox-related posts here, I've seen a lot of mentions of #Waterfox...
I especially liked the blog post on their stance against #AI in the browser, and the fact that they have formal structures and a legal entity in place.
So from a technical/feature perspective, what are the differences between Zen and Waterfox?

I'm sorry, but if your web page doesnt load in Netscape Navigator v9.0.0.6, then I'm just not viewing it.
@tinker Hoping #ZenBrowser takes off as the FF alternative, really don’t want to switch to a chrome based browser - https://floss.social/@zenbrowser/115731119480346990

@Tutanota I have found #ZenBrowser and have noted that you are sponsoring it. Is anyone from you involved in the development or review? The reason for asking: I am wondering how secure and legit #ZenBrowser is.
I have been happily using #zenbrowser for a month. It's a fork of firefox and actually what Firefox should have been.
Its compatible with firefox account and addons so you can sync and revert if needed, but its a very nice experience that I highly recommend.
😇 Zen Browser — What Mozilla Firefox Should Be?
「 While it inherits much of the underlying AI features and call-home telemetry present in Firefox, Zen developers have chosen to disable most of that stuff by default — and are currently debating whether to strip them out entirely 」

LibreWolf has made some choices that makes it incompatible with some website which is a pain.
I mean it's great for safer privacy focussed browsing, but for everyday I find zen to be a good middle ground.
And I love the UI
Fully compatible with Firefox account
Ayé, je viens de désinstaller #Firefox. 💔
