#Elsevier finally (after 25 years) retracted the primary study concluding that #glyphosate is safe for humans. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the #Roundup herbicide, manufactured by #Monsanto.

Among the grounds for the retraction:
* "The article's conclusions…are solely based on unpublished studies from Monsanto."
* "Employees of Monsanto may have contributed to the writing of the article without proper acknowledgment as co-authors."
* "The authors may have received [undisclosed] financial compensation from Monsanto for their work on this article."
Remember that in 2020, the #Trump #EPA "relied almost entirely on #Monsanto studies" to conclude that Roundup was safe.

In 2016, Monsanto made a show of sharing its research on glyphosate with the public. But instead of making it #OpenAccess, it put print copies in a room in Brussels, required registration to use the room, and then closed the room after two months.

Two questions for follow up studies:
1. Why did Elsevier's 𝘙𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘛𝘰𝘹𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 need 25 years to retract this piece of Monsanto advertising?
2. What harm did the article cause during the last 25 years?
Update. Watch this division within the #Trump admin. (1) The Trump #EPA still considers #glyphosate to be safe for humans. "An EPA spokesman…said the agency was aware of the article’s #retraction [and] said the EPA’s assessment of glyphosate’s risks had not relied solely on the study." (2) But the Make America Healthy Again [#MAHA] movement led by #RFKJr wants to ban glyphosate. RFKJr "once served as co-counsel in a lawsuit against #Monsanto over exposure to #Roundup."

#Oops: The seminal (strongly influencing later developments) paper that has been used for 25 years to justify that the use of #Glyphosate is safe has been retracted.
"Concerns were raised regarding the authorship of this paper, validity of the research findings in the context of misrepresentation of the contributions by the authors and the study sponsor and potential conflicts of interest of the authors. "

This should be known more widely!
An example of how "corporate-influenced research" has shaped the public discourse: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1462901125001765
It is explicitly mentioned that all of this ends up in the training data of #LLMs.
The example is on #Glyphosate in particular, the pattern is unfortunately more widespread.
Citing "serious ethical concerns," journal retracts key Monsanto Roundup safety study
An inherently dangerous product - and product system - that has deleterious effects to all human, animal, and plant life on Earth. It works by injecting a genetic antidote to specified crops and then eventually killing everything else without any reliable means to prevent the toxic part - #glyphosate - from going everywhere. It's not "just a weed spray". Thousands have died and possibly tens of thousands permanently disabled or eventually-poisoned without knowing, with very specific oncology that can be identified in humans but isn't because we don't get tested for it.
Monsanto-Bayer has been getting away with it in large part because of a liability compartmentalization & management scheme that provides them virtual legal impunity; and the fraudulent "science" like this, for which they have paid lots of money. So it is a VERY big deal that this fake science has gotten retracted. Bayer will no doubt sue the fakescience/retractor publisher out of existence but that isn't the story.
