1/4 🚨 The Digital Omnibus proposals are here - and our rights and protections online are officially under threat 🚨

The proposals published today endanger the very core of EU's digital protections for people - the #GDPR, #ePrivacy and the #AIAct.

Weakening these safeguards would entrench #surveillance, profiling and algorithmic #discrimination in every aspect of society 🙅🏾

Read our press release for more details: https://edri.org/our-work/commissions-digital-omnibus-is-a-major-rollback-of-eu-digital-protections/

2/4 What do the #DigitalOmnibus proposals mean for our #DataProtection and #privacy?

🚩weaken ePrivacy rules, opening the door to constant tracking of phones, cars, and smart devices
🚩 reopen and hollow out the GDPR, allowing corporations to mark their own homework
🚩create a digital environment where state actors and corporate powers – especially Big Tech - gain more freedom to collect and exploit personal information

In #Germany, a court ruled that #OpenAI violated #copyright law by using protected #songlyrics without permission. The court says that each time a copyrighted song is used, either for training or in an chat answer, OpenAI must pay a license fee to the artists.

Remember when the @EDPS found the @EUCommission's use of #Microsoft's #Office365 was in breach of #dataprotection law?

Looks like they've found a way to use that software differently "in cooperation with Microsoft" and the EDPS has now closed the investigation.
