Once, drawings for anime ended up in garbage bins, now they are the focus of exhibitions in Japan’s biggest museums and galleries. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2025/12/27/art/anime-manga-exhibitions/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #culture #art #anime #manga #evangelion #ghostintheshell #exhibitions #gundam #animetokyostation #2025inreview
I'm already loving the thowback style trying to replicate the original manga.
The horrible American dub is closer than the subtitles:
angel forms lay entranced, thick as autumnal leaves
nine days they fell, confounded chaos roared

I don't think Ronan Harris was inspired or influenced by Innocence when he wrote Darkangel. It's just that the song uses the imagery of a fallen angel, and because that is largely what Milton's Paradise Lost is about, there is this link with the Ghost in the Shell movie.
The shape of the airplane's wings and the cathedral-like buildings on Etorofu reinforce the reference.
After all, Togusa is quoting from Paradise Lost to express his reaction to the scene they are confronted with. And the makers of the movie have him do this because they want us to realise this connection.
This is the shot I referred to

Whenever I listen to VNV Nation's Darkangel, I see before me that scene of Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence where Batō and Togusa descend on Etorofu in a plane that seems to have the wings of a fallen angel.
And Togusa quotes from Paradise Lost:
"His legions-Angel Forms, who lay entranced. Thick as autumnal leaves that strow the brooks."
Batō rejoins:
"Now you're quoting Milton? But we're nae Satan."
