Every time news media report on overseas "investment" in Aotearoa, they need to also talk about the return the extractors making that "investment" expects on their capital.

I'm not a financial expert by any stretch of the imagination, but a quick web search suggests scAmazon usually aim for about a 15% return. So when news media report on scAmazon "investing" $7 billion here, the headline should read;

'Amazon hopes to extract $50 million from the NZ economy'

How rich people avoid paying tax

(Originally by Instgram user @newmoney.blog)

This image appears to be a satirical illustration about how wealthy individuals can minimize their tax burden. It depicts a scenario where a CEO receives $1 million in salary and has $1 million worth of company stock. The illustration shows the CEO borrowing money against the value of their stock, spending the borrowed money as if it were income, and then claiming they have no income for tax purposes. The text suggests this strategy allows the CEO to pay significantly less in taxes.

@infobeautiful Ordinary people can do similar things, like taking a 401(k) loan, which is essentially borrowing money from yourself.

Investors sense that Europe's military buildup — spurred by a determination to reduce its dependency on the U.S. — may last for years, if not decades. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2025/08/09/markets/credit-europe-defense/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #markets #markets #investment #stocks #defense #europe #eu

Chi Onwurah, Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central/West and chair of parliament’s Science, Innovation & Technology select committee is merely the latest to argue that the UK's long-term economic malaise is a direct result of the economic concentration in London & the SE.

As he says: If the SE's ' parochialism is left undisturbed we will remain two countries when it comes to productivity & output - suffering economic stagnation while staring at the solution'.
