Today's Mathtober prompt is "Wheel", which reminded me of a color wheel. So I went with a ring of penguins in rainbow colors for today's drawing.
I liked how it turned out, so I drew a few on watercolor paper. I might put these in my online shop: ArtAtomic.io.

The 'hoiho' (yellow-eyed penguin) is one of the world's rarest penguins. It's an iconic penguin in Aotearoa/New Zealand. And it's in severe danger. Department of Conservation (DOC) data showed the northern population had collapsed by 80 percent since 2008, with some colonies already becoming functionally extinct.
Conservation groups are calling on the government to put an emergency fishing ban in place. The government would be informed by a "scientific multi-threat risk assessment". OK. But the government awarded the tender for the assessment in September 2022 already with diddly squat action. While many things have fast tracked through legislation this year with urgency and attempts to keep things clandestine.
Why am I saying this? Well, my #scouts name is 'Hoiho', so naturally I mentally stumbled upon this piece on the radio this morning.

Wrapping up my editing for the Macquarie Island trip. Was taking roughly 7,000 frames a day with the burst mode on. That's a lot of files to delete.

Tight crop on that frame. This was taken on the LUMIX G9II using it's subject detect feature. It quickly spots the birds in the frame and shifts the focus to grab them. It's crazy fast. Lens here was the 200mm F2.8 by Leica/Panasonic.

Fifteen years ago I got a chance to sail down to Macquarie Island, the last stop before you reach the Antarctic Confluence and the ice of East Antarctica.
Last week I got a chance to go back, and the Royal Penguins did not dissapoint. They are amazing little critters, full of personality and curiosity.
