So here’s a connection graph of my #Zettelkasten notes. I’m very much not a visual person, so I don’t know how to get insight from node-and-link graphs.

Does anyone have pointers to sources on how to infer useful things from a visual representation of a knowledge graph?

It’s a big blob of dots, mostly all the same size but with one big one, connected with dots. There is no obvious structure. (For example, there’s only one node that has a lot of links, a table-of-contents node.)

Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary that I have been using a digital Zettelkasten. As someone with ADHD and a long history of half-used notebooks, I've been surprised with how successful the experiment has been. I've put together some thoughts below on what I learned.

The attached video is a timelapse of the Zettelkasten notes as they were created over 12 months. Each dot is a file, each line is a hyperlink between them. The coloured dots represent different areas of notes. It's fun to look at but I don't spend much time here.

Over decades of writing, I've learned the process of providing a narrative justification of a claim often makes me realize the claim isn't true. Realizing this after you've written a gazillion words is not super efficient.

I'd hoped #Zettelkasten would help with that (I've been searching for a way to make writing good stuff easier), but it appears that it doesn't challenge me to rethink the same way writing narrative text does. (2/3)

Oh well, “one weird trick" is almost always a lure for suckers.

Tentatively: #Zettelkasten is a good way of generating new claims (thinking new thoughts), but it doesn't help (me) with critiquing those claims.

Darn.

I’ve described #Zettelkasten as a hypertext of claims¹ and I think of a nonfiction narrative as an artfully arranged and linearized set of claims (that usually build up to a master claim).

374 main notes in, I've been experimenting with writing short essays using extracted claims as a sort of outline. I've noticed a disconcerting thing. (1/3)
