Seafood NZ, the industry body that represents New Zealand’s commercial fishing interests, put out one of the most mind-bogglingly tone deaf press releases recently in response to the new David Attenborough documentary, ‘Ocean’.

Their response to the documentary, which highlights the dangers posed by bottom trawling and industrial fishing, was to claim that the way that New Zealand performs bottom trawling would somehow make for a great birthday present for Sir David.

The Seafood NZ responses presented in this video are REAL QUOTES from THEIR OWN press release. THE CONTENT LITERALLY WRITES ITSELF!

when Seafood NZ says it was just a "rare mistake" that bottom trawlers hauled up 6 tonnes of coral earlier this year:

(based only on reported bycatch, there is certainly more that goes unreported)

#BanBottomTrawling #ProtectTheOcean #oceans #fisheries #NewZealand

Patrick Starfish and Spongebob meme.
Patrick (representing Seafood NZ) says "It was just a mistake we trawled 6 tonnes of coral."

Spongebob looks indignant as he opens a trash can to reveal "37 kilograms of coral last year"

Spongebob points at "5 reported incidents between 1 and 5.5 tonnes" in the corner of the house.

Spongebob is upset as an overflowing fridge let's out "More than 1 report a year greater than 1 tonne"

Spongebob tears the wallpaper to reveal " 31 reported trawls between 100 kg and 1000 kg"

Spongebob lifts the cover of a couch to reveal it is "over 60 tows over 60 kgs or more"

Spongebob points outside through the window, Patrick looks surprised as they look at a pile bigger than their house outside, labelled "34 tonnes of coral trawled since oct 2019"

This video from Seafood Watch and the Monterey Bay Aquarium gives orange roughy a red rating for being unsustainably fished with bottom trawling nets that wipe out entire coral ecosystems.

They are rightly telling conscientious customers to avoid buying it.

"It's a red alert if you ever see orange roughy on the menu" -> how's that for NZ's clean green trademark?

Jones responding to our polling with some misleading info:
🐟 1000 ton would be less than half of the reported catch in one fisheries area from 2024, the one considered to be collapsing. If that is all that remains then things are truly dire!
🐟 What are these "other nations that are there" that he speaks of? Only New Zealand bottom trawls in the south pacific high seas. Therefore we have the WORST track record using the MOST DESTRUCTIVE method available.
Sick of the implied and reflexive "racism as a defense" NZFirst is so fond of.

For reference, this is the reported catch in just one of the fisheries management areas, currently considered to be collapsed.

See where 1000 ton would figure?
yeah, not good.

Embarrassing. New Zealand is pushing to allow for more coral destruction on the high seas, out of step with other countries who are backing greater ocean protection.

NZ Govt you know how to fix this. Stop bottom trawling in High Seas of the South Pacific.

The Coalition of Destruction is completely out of touch, pushing for more coral to be trashed without consequences while people around New Zealand want to see more protection and the end of bottom trawling. 🌊 🪸

We have the numbers to prove it. 🤓

Caught up with the legend currently beating a world swimming record and demanding an end to bottom trawling: Jono Ridler!

It's so inspiring to see people putting their body and their energy in the line for their beliefs, and in this case, for a healthy ocean for all of us and those who will come after us.

Follow Jono's incredible swim at http://swim4theocean.org/ and let's stand together to end destructive bottom trawling!

It's really exciting that the kaupapa of ocean protection, and particualrly of ending bottom trawling, is taking off!

Live Ocean is the organisation behind Jono Ridler's record breaking swim aiming to highlight the issue and end bottom trawling in New Zealand.

and here is a great post explaining clearly what it is and why it must end.

The corals in the depths of the ocean around Aotearoa are truly special. That's why they should not be wrecked by indiscriminate bottom trawling. 🪸🌊

They're too precious to lose!
Great article here, including the current record breaking swim by Jono Riddler to stop bottom trawling. 🏊

Shane Jones is backing down from at least one of his controversial, pro-industry proposals. Largely as a result of protest action by recreational fishers last year.
