Webb maps the mysterious upper atmosphere of Uranus

Hey, hey, it’s everyone’s favorite 7th planet from the Sun! Webb has provided us with the first vertical view of Uranus’s ionosphere, revealing auroras shaped by its tilted magnetic field. Getting a look at the structure of the region where the atmosphere interacts strongly with the planet’s magnetic field is giving us the most detailed portrait yet of where its auroras form, how the magnetic field influences them, and also data on how Uranus’s atmosphere has continued to cool since the 1990s. Uranus has the strangest magnetosphere in the Solar System. It is tilted and offset from the planet’s rotation axis (and this planet already rolls around the Sun nearly on its side), which means auroras move across the surface in complex ways. Better understanding Uranus will give us insight into ice-giant planets and help us better characterize giant planets outside our Solar System. This image collage shows 5 time-stamped images mapping the vertical structure of Uranus's atmosphere, uncovering how temperature and charged particles vary with height across the planet. Using Webb’s NIRSpec instrument, the team detected the faint glow from molecules high above the clouds. These unique data provide the most detailed portrait yet of where the planet’s auroras form, how they are influenced by its unusually tilted magnetic field, and how Uranus’s atmosphere has continued to cool over the past three decades. The results offer a new window into how ice-giant planets distribute energy in their upper layers. Two bright auroral bands were detected near Uranus’s magnetic poles, together with reduced emission and ion density in part of the region between the two bands (a feature likely linked to transitions in magnetic field lines). Pour le réveillon de ce soir il y aura une petite #conjonction entre la #Lune et les #Pléiades qui est un amas d'étoiles. Normalement visible sans instrument l'usage de jumelles sera recommandé. Pour la France métropolitaine il faudra observer des que le ciel sera sombre. Les Pléiades seront à droite et un peu en haut de la Lune. Pas loin se trouve aussi la planète #Uranus visible au télescope ou en photo longue pose.

Simulation Stellarium du phénomène représentant ce qu'il est possible de voir aux jumelles. La Lune gibbeuse (la phase entre le quartier et la pleine Lune) apparaît vers la gauche. À sa droite et un peu en haut quelques étoiles peu visibles, ce sont les Pléiades. Simulation pour 18h30 heure française.

Simulation similaire à la précédente mais ne prenant pas en compte l’éblouissement dû à la Lune. Les Pléiades apparaissent donc bien plus visibles. Le fond est rempli d'étoiles. Uranus est aussi visible comme l'une de ces étoiles à la droite de l'image assez loin des Pléiades et encore plus de la Lune. Elle reste toutefois dans la même partie du ciel.

Photo de la conjonction. A gauche de l'image la Lune apparaît éblouissante. Au centre un peu en haut l'amas d'étoiles des Pléiades apparaît. Elle est composée d'une douzaine d'étoiles sur la photo (en vrai il y en a une centaine mais la plupart sont trop faibles pour être sur la photo). D'autres étoiles sont éparpillées sur l'image. À droite et un peu en bas l'une d'elle, assez faible, est en fait la planète Uranus.

From Voyager 2’s smooth blue-green view in 1986 to Webb’s breathtaking 2023 image, our vision of Uranus has transformed. Keck (2002) revealed faint rings, Hubble (2022) showed brighter tones and weather patterns, and Webb unveiled glowing rings and a luminous atmosphere.

Let's get this over with: Astronomers just found a new moon around Uranus.

It's part of an unusual group of 14 mini satellites orbiting close to the planet, within the orbit of its 1st major moon, Miranda. They may relate to the planet's rings & odd, sideways tilt.
