And rounding up the week with a bit of #GoodNews for the ocean on the deep sea mining front. 🐙 🌊
Cook Islands seabed mining decision delayed following local opposition
The community in Waikato has taken a bold step to ban bottom trawling and other damaging fishing methods in most of the coastal area around them. 🌊 💪
But of course now the greedy fishing industry lobby has announced they will try to stop the regional council's decision to continue unrestricted profiting off ocean destruction. 🐟
We stand in solidarity with mana whenua, local leaders, scientists and environmental advocates that want to protect the ocean for everyone. 🌏

Breaking 🚨 🌊
Cook Islanders holding a banner reading “Don’t Mine the Moana” have confronted an exploration vessel as it returned to Rarotonga port today, protesting the emerging threat of seabed mining. 🐙
Kayaktivists held up banners sending a signal that the Pacific movement against seabed mining is strong and wannabe miners are not welcome here. ✊

The good, the bad and the ugly about the new Hauraki Gulf Protection Act. 🌊
This new law will increase protection in the waters of the Hauraki Gulf and is coming into force from next weekend. 🐳

While not lacking criticism, the Hauraki Gulf Protection Act is coming into force this weekend.
It is a net positive, despite its shortcomings, but much more work needs to be done to restore the mauri of Tīkapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.

A sliver of #goodNews though:
While Central Government kowtows to the vested interests of destructive industries, local government finds ways to stand up and defend the environment in their own regions.
Well done Waikato Regional Council! 👏

Since the #GlobalOceanTreaty passed the threshold of 60 countries a lot more have ratified. The current number is 75! 🌊
But on the 1st of October the state of Palestine ratified the High Seas Treaty or #BBNJ, and I think that one ratification is particularly important to note.

Despite the last minute, undemocratic carve-out for limited commercial fishing in "protected" areas, this Bill is a huge step forward for Tīkapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.

This video from Seafood Watch and the Monterey Bay Aquarium gives orange roughy a red rating for being unsustainably fished with bottom trawling nets that wipe out entire coral ecosystems.
They are rightly telling conscientious customers to avoid buying it.
"It's a red alert if you ever see orange roughy on the menu" -> how's that for NZ's clean green trademark?

Great question. Why indeed? 🤔

You can now watch this documentary by Te Ao Māori News on the controversial and destructive seabed mining project by TTR/ Manuka Resources.
Every court has rejected this harmful project, the people don't want it, but Jones and his donors won't stop pushing it.

Today the government announced a huge orange roughy allowable catch reduction in the collapsed Eastern South Chatham Rise fishery. 🐟
This is a step in the right direction, but still doesn't go far enough.
The fact that the Minister is now considering closing parts of the ocean to protect spawning fish is a significant shift. ✊
Our demand is for all seamounts to be off-limits for bottom trawling. 🪸

The Global Ocean Treaty and the High Seas Alliance in TIME Magazine! 🌊🐙
"It’s hard to overstate the significance of a new international treaty at this current political moment. There has never been a climate diplomacy effort like this for the ocean—it is obviously a big win for the ocean, but also for multilateralism."
"The effort to establish high seas protections will outlast any single administration, and global public support will be critical to these efforts."
