The calls for protection of the collapsing Orange Roughy fishery keep coming.

Despite the minister and his industry influence, the people really want the ocean to be better protected and allowed to thrive. 🐟 🌊

A shark and dolphin walk into a fishing industry conference…

We went to the annual Seafood NZ Conference last week to deliver a strong message to the fishing industry and the government - we need more ocean protection.

With the help of Sharon the Shark and Hāna Hector, the dolphin who came along with our friends from Dolphin Defenders, we met attendees from the fishing industry at the Seafood NZ Conference.

The response was mixed. Hāna even got kicked out of the conference!

Sorry I missed this update from Thursday last week, but Congo 🇨🇬 is the latest country to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty (aka #BBNJ) bringing the total number of ratifications to 52 out of 60 needed for the treaty to come into effect.

We are so close to acquiring a whole new legal framework for international ocean protection! 🌊🐙🐳

No one but Jones, his captured regulator, and industrial interests support these proposed changes. 🌊 The author clearly states "If there are no more fish, there's no longer a fishing industry."

"All of these proposals have the very real potential to nullify decades of efforts to restore our fisheries for everyone’s benefit — including for the commercial fishing industry."

Hōiho are at breaking point. The fishing industry is killing the ocean and it needs to stop. 🐧

This is a NZ Orange roughy fishery that is in freefall. MPI is consulting what to do about it. They need to prioritise sustainability over profits. The ESCR ORH3B must be closed immediately. Even the most conservative option may fall short.

This is the story of just one courageous fisheries observer willing to speak out.

We do not know the exact extent or frequency of situations like this, but it is certain that his experience was not unique. 🐟

Greed and the profit motive are powerful incentives, the safety of onboard observers should be a priority. This is also why we need cameras on all fishing vessels. 📹

A group of rangatahi have put out this community petition to create and expand marine reserves and do our bit to achieve 30% of protected areas of the ocean by 2030.

It is inspiring to see them organising themselves and I would like to ask everyone to please support their petition. 🌏
