The awesomely named "Review of sustainability measures for orange roughy (ORH 3B)" is emblematic of putting profits over ocean health. 🌊
You can tell the government to ban bottom trawling now.
Just send them an email.

This is a NZ Orange roughy fishery that is in freefall. MPI is consulting what to do about it. They need to prioritise sustainability over profits. The ESCR ORH3B must be closed immediately. Even the most conservative option may fall short.

Great things can happen when nature is respected and given the time and space to recover.
Good example to follow elsewhere!

Unsurprisingly, it looks like Shane did not like our banner. 😅
Here he is again, ranting about it.

Subject line: Submission on Orange Roughy fishery (ORH3B)
My name is [Name] and I am [Something about you]. I live in [Place].
This is my personal submission on the proposed changes for the East and South Chatham Rise (ESCR) orange roughy (ORH 3B) fishery, which is now on the brink of collapse.
Orange roughy are a unique, slow growing species of deep sea fish that have been decimated by the New Zealand fishing industry and weak regulation. Orange roughy congregate on seamounts and are caught via bottom trawling.
I know bottom trawling is highly destructive - wiping out orange roughy numbers and also destroying the deep sea habitats they depend on.
I share the concerns of marine experts who are calling for a closure of this fishery so that roughy, and the habitats like seamounts, that they depend on, can recover.
I support the strongest measures that will ensure orange roughy thrive.
I don’t think option three - “60% catch reduction and partial closure” - goes far enough. Only closing the ESCR fishery completely, alongside a ban on bottom trawling on vulnerable seamounts and similar features, will protect orange roughy for the future.
Kind regards,

This is the story of just one courageous fisheries observer willing to speak out.
We do not know the exact extent or frequency of situations like this, but it is certain that his experience was not unique. 🐟
Greed and the profit motive are powerful incentives, the safety of onboard observers should be a priority. This is also why we need cameras on all fishing vessels. 📹

Young people are stepping up for ocean protection again! 🌊
A group of rangatahi have put out this community petition to create and expand marine reserves and do our bit to achieve 30% of protected areas of the ocean by 2030.
It is inspiring to see them organising themselves and I would like to ask everyone to please support their petition. 🌏
