Another of scientists without a known birthday: my #linocut of ancient Chinese Han Dynasty #polymath & statesman Zhang Heng (78-139) who invented a seismoscope (simplified seismometer which does not make a record of earth motions) to detect distant earthquakes & indicate their direction, 2000 years ago! Here with a reconstruction of his seismoscope, schematic of how it might have worked & 🧵

Here's a worthy geoheritage cause; the Scottish Geology Trust is running a crowdfunding campaign for a "Deep Time Trail" at Siccar Point ahead of the 300th anniversary of James Hutton's Birth next year.
It looks like access has already been improved since I last visited (when you parked by a vegetable farm and clambered over fences), but some proper interpretative signage would be a real boon.

Saddest thing is that we've seen this coming for years, and if they would've listened to their own scientists, it would've been at least delayed. But they didn't just deplete their water, they destroyed the #aquifer .
Iran's president says moving the capital Tehran is now a necessity as the water crisis deepens. That'll be moving 16 million people (metro area) then, almost equal to the entire population of the Netherlands.

A petition to stop the dissolution of 'Geology' (including palaeontology) at the University of Leicester: https://c.org/PYDT54ynd2
"If the proposal goes ahead, many staff will lose their jobs, crucial research will be shut down, and the future of undergraduate degrees is in jeopardy."

Happy birthday to geologist Charles Lyell (1797-1875) who in his famous ‘Principles of Geology,’ wrote that to avoid some sources of prejudice in understanding #geology would require an Amphibious Being, who could, say, compare processes happening today on land & those happening below water with what we see in the geological record. 🧵1/n

In this battle between pretty blue but very rare gemstones, I am voting Jeremejevite, which is pleochroic with colour changing with viewing angle and piezoelectric, over Haüyne, formed in magma chambers, even though it can fluoresce.
It’s a tough call. Art & physics arguments for both.
