I’d laugh if it weren’t so damned tragic. It happens ALL THE TIME.

And it must be said the officer knew precisely what I was asking, and why, and knew in the manner he replied that he was acting in a grey area.
As he was polite I made it clear to him I had no problem with his behaviour at an individual level, as this decision was taken at a level above his.
And - give the Swiss their due here - EVERYONE was checked. Not just ethnic minorities. So that's fair at least.
This is our Independence Moment.
From defence to clean tech, we choose independence over dependence.
We invest in security, democracy, and dignity – from housing and jobs to AI and energy.
We defend democracy. We protect media freedom. Because truth and trust are Europe's strongest shields.
Europe must fight for its freedom, unity, and future.
Leading, protecting, and delivering.
These are just some of the key battles Europe is fighting 👉 https://europa.eu/!NNWdhF
No thanks.
What lets you travel freely across 29 different European countries?
It’s Schengen, of course! So, you’re free to live your best European Summer!
Schengen is one of the world’s largest zones of free movement. It has reshaped how over 450 million Europeans live, work, and travel.
It’s a symbol of freedom, collaboration, and opportunity, turning the promise of Europe into an everyday reality!
Wherever you are in Europe, we hope you’re having a great summer.

Austria is definitely the most aggressive in filing notifications for exceptions. And it seems the @EUCommission is totally fine with this behaviour that in my opinion goes against everything Schengen stands for.
In 6 countries (Austria, Germany, Norway, Denmark, France, Sweden) Schengen is effectively dead since 9 years in a row. These countries have filed (overlapping) notifications with various reasons, meaning that they could perform continuous border controls on internal borders. Something that according to the Schengen Agreement should be a very rare exception in very exceptional times.

If you want to play with the data: I uploaded a CSV with the basic data that should be clean and correct at https://codeberg.org/jwildeboer/SchengenData/src/branch/main/CSV/2025-08-04_SchengenExceptionsClean.csv
I will update the CSV when the Commission makes new data available, time permitting. Enjoy!
