The AI chat in #Calibre is even worse than I expected? It doesn't consume the context of the book you're discussing, so anything it can answer about the book is based on stuff available in its existing training data.
So, if you don't want Calibre to have an LLM, I believe your point of no return is version 8.11.
Luckily, since Debian Stable is reasonable, the repository still has 8.5.
The thing I would recommend is if you use Calibre regularly and do not want any "ai" garbage, mark your version now in APT and hope that the @grimthorpe 's Clbre fork project continues to advance (I have hope) so that it will make a newer version of Calibre without LLM's easy to install.
For the time being, my Debian (and Debian based distro) friends, you can mark the current version to be safe.
Just run:
sudo apt-mark hold calibre
And to check that it worked, run:
apt-mark showhold
#Clbre #Calibre #Debian #Debian13 #APT #ebooks #Kindle #noai #ai #chatgpt #openai #Google #Gemini #stoptheslop #slop #GNULinux #GNU #Linux
"It's not going to be scrapped, so good bye, I guess. You are more than welcome to not use AI if you don't want to. calibre very nicely makes that easy for you by having it off by default to the extent that the AI code is not even loaded unless you enable it. What you DO NOT get to do is try to make that choice for other people"

«Kovid betrayed us with Calibre 8.16.2, and we as a community never should have let that happen, never have placed such a burden on individual generosity. The synthesis of these two truths, then, is nearly self-evident. There must be a new effort, free from AI encumbrances, that is built from the ground-up as a community effort. Something that can outlive the decisions of any one participant»
Glad to see more efforts on community-based FOSS governance!

Taking software written as a labour of love for some 20 years by an (admittedly difficult-at-times) Indian (who still, as far as I know, lives in India), conveniently labelling it fascist-adjacent because of US politics, and then forking it to a US-based organisation is, at best, US arrogance and, at worst, US imperialism.
Plenty of Indian #FOSS organisations they could have reached out to and partnered with to host the fork, but no: USAmericans gotta USAmerican.

A friend is pissy about Calibre adding A.I. into this ebook manager so they are creating a new fork called Clbre, because the A.I. is being stripped out.
