The discovery of the signal happened purely by chance.
Tilley regularly monitors satellites from his home in British Columbia as a hobby. He was working on another project when he accidentally triggered a scan of radio frequencies that are normally quiet.
"It was just a clumsy move at the keyboard," he said. "I was resetting some stuff and then all of a sudden I'm looking at the wrong antenna, the wrong band." #military #DOD #NSA #USSPACECOM
There goes 10 years of black budget to a hobbyist accident 😂 https://www.npr.org/2025/10/17/nx-s1-5575254/spacex-starshield-starlink-signal

Trump calls for using US cities as ‘training ground’ for military
President Donald Trump has proposed using American cities as training grounds for the armed forces and spoke of needing military might to combat what he called the “invasion from within.”
He was joined by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who declared an end to “woke” culture. The fact that admirals and generals from conflict zones were summoned for a lecture on race and gender showed the extent to which the US culture wars have become a front-and-center agenda item for Hegseth’s Pentagon.
The military leaders sat mostly stone-faced through Trump’s politicized remarks.
Trump has already tested the limits of the nearly 150-year-old #PosseComitatus Act, which restricts the military’s domestic role.
#Hegseth said he is easing disciplinary rules and weakening hazing protections, removing guardrails the military put in place after numerous scandals and investigations.

Hegseth "is a fervent devotee of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches, a body that preaches the “most extreme views of women’s submission found in any form of Christianity,” religious scholar Julie Ingersoll told Salon. The church’s leader, Doug Wilson, recently gave an interview to CNN in which he argued that women shouldn’t have the right to vote and have no place outside the home. “Women are the kind of people that people come out of,” he said"
So why is Hegseth's wife his top military advisor (while both of them are bereft of any qualifications for these jobs, and with him already having committed crimes by sharing classified information with her) ... "The reason is both simple and stupid: Because her work is unpaid. As it turns out, all this contempt that leaders of the religious right have for a woman’s capabilities miraculously dries up the second her intelligence can be used to serve a man and not herself." #military#DOD #natsechttps://www.salon.com/2025/09/15/pete-hegseth-wants-women-in-the-kitchen-but-his-wife-as-his-top-adviser/

Update. It's just a coincidence that the newer open letter to Congress in the previous post, this thread (nd but approx March 3) …
https://ucs-documents.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/science-network/Scientific-Society-Sign-On-Letter-signed-2-28-25.pdf
… and this older letter (nd but approx Feb 17) …
https://unitedsciencealliance.org/
… were both initially signed by 48 scientific societies. They're different letters, organized by different groups, and signed by (mostly) different societies.
Update. The American Physical Society (#APS, @apsphysics) is running a survey on the impact of cuts to US science #funding. Please take it if you're affected or likely to be affected.
https://apsphysics.fillout.com/t/6ESUva3vwGus
"This survey collects stories showcasing the transformative positive impact of #NSF, #NIST, #DOE, #NASA, and #DOD-funded research and programs as well as what would be lost if support for basic research evaporates. You can document your experiences and share how recent executive actions have impacted you. Individual stories will be only be used publicly with permission or when fully anonymized."
Update. The Dept of Defense (#DOD) just released the implementation plan for its upgraded #OpenAccess policy under the Biden-era #OSTP #NelsonMemo.

This is the first fed agency action of its kind since #Trump took office. Note that, so far, this work has not stopped or changed.
