Thanks to all who work on #xfce, I never felt so comfortable with a window manager since #windowmaker a decade ago.

The new dark mint-y themes made empty checkboxes almost invisible.
Both on my laptop screen and my 4K TV.
Increasing the brightness/contrast ratio manually "fixes" this, but obviously it's far from perfect.
Probably should file an issue but don't know where exactly.
Any Linux Mint devs here?

Oldest kid left her laptop at work and needed to do study tonight, and asked if I have a spare computer. She is now happily working on her assignment on the iMac that I Linuxed last month, and was immediately impressed at how much faster it runs than when it was on MacOS. #linux#LinuxMint #xfce

Edit: this is a positive, pro Open Source post, not a "us" against "them". When an Open Source project makes progress, is a progress for all the Open Source world.
FreeBSD 15.0 will allow users to install KDE Desktop directly from the installer. This is great news. I'm reading the comments on various news sites: “It’s too late”, or “What’s the point? No one uses it”. Or even “We already have Linux, we don’t need another OS”.
I may sound repetitive, but I really don’t understand why, in the Open Source world, people aren’t happy to have more alternatives to consider. Whether it's social networks, operating systems, or software in general, many seem to get stuck on the most popular solution and almost ideologically reject alternatives.
Fear of change?
Maybe - which is why progress is welcome, because once they see what other solutions are capable of, I’m sure they'll start to give them a chance.
Just yesterday I was talking about this with a colleague, but I’ll write about it in another post.
Time for my coffee.
While *I* would have preferred #xfce over #kde in the installer (because I am an XFCE user) that's not the point. The point being the FreeBSD team, based on user survey results, is *listening.*
To the people who leave comments like "it's too late" or "we already have Linux" then the point has been missed. What's great about #opensource is the plethora of choices. With #FreeBSD 15 offering #KDE, it means the quality of choices just improved.
One more screenshot of the classic MacOS 8/9 theme under XFce. Honestly, from all the themes I've done, this one I enjoy the most. It's rather convincing because it doesn't use docks or launchers that all modern OSes use, so it feels different.

I've been meaning to write about the state of #accessibility support in #tech for a while now but figured it was a good time to do it now since The Register published this article.
As a #parent of a child with #disabilities, as well as being a #disability #advocate and #technology professional, I appreciate The Register's coverage of Global Accessibility Awareness Day and Apple's pursuit in improving accessibility in their OSes. Accessibility support is simultaneously necessary and perpetually a challenge. Often it seems like a clumsy afterthought or just prohibitively expensive.
As much as I am an #opensource advocate, the reality is out of all the mainstream OSes, #Microsoft#Windows has, unquestionably, the best support. #Apple has some catching up to do. The open source world trails behind with projects in various states of quality.
One of the areas needing serious improvement is eye gaze technology. Users who have serious motor impairments (spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, ALS) rely on this technology to communicate. Windows 10 supports this functionality natively yet #Linux still treats it as a #DIY project, at best. There is little coordination between desktop environments like #KDE#GNOME and #XFCE nor is there any kind of unified API.
It's 2025, we have reached the first quarter of the 21st century and accessibility support is still an afterthought. We can and must do better.
