Traditionally, #Xfce is newsworthy perhaps once every other year.

It's part of the reason I've been using it for 20+ years and volunteering with the project for...um *cough* 13+(!) years. Quiet, stable, predicatble. Boring, even. I prefer that in my Desktop Environment.

It's not even the end of January and we've already had one big announcement with #Xfwl4 and there are probably two more on the way this year:

1. The initial development release of Xfwl4 sometime mid-year.
2. The probable release of Xfce4 4.22 in December(Our release roadmap still needs to be updated, real soon now).

I hope that I handle this much Xfce excitement this year. 🤣 🚀

I like the #XFCE desktop on #Linux and #FreeBSD as it is full featured, bug free, and lightning fast. I noticed the battery life on my new laptop was ok, but found it odd why the CPU was running at high frequencies at all up to 5GHz. So I set the maximum CPU speed at 500MHz, which is faster than the insane speed of a #DEC #Alphaserver in the early 1990's. And this is still that fast, but with 8 cores. And now the battery is on the second day at 86%. Even when compiling code, 500MHz is insanely fast. The battery charge might last longer than some calculators I had...

@SanskritFritz I can say that the #Termux/PRoot/VNC approach works but for average users this one seems to be a better fit.

I looked in more detail. It is a rewrite (previously Kotlin + C++). They write the app in #Rust and use #Wayland and #PRoot. PRoot can be a show stopper since some Android kernels have no system calls to support it. Besides #XFCE, #KDE, #GNOME and more are being worked on.

The BSDs are *awesome* operating systems. #FreeBSD is a high performance general purpose OS. It is modern #Unix. #NetBSD is for portability, it supports nearly every CPU architecture under the sun. #OpenBSD is security-focused. #GhostBSD is a FreeBSD fork focused on the desktop.

Most of my experience is with FreeBSD, which I will enthusiastically share. It is unquestionably a solid server OS. As a desktop OS, it works quite well. It definitely does not feel like "Linux from 2004." The major desktop environments like #KDE #GNOME #XFCE are all supported and #nvidia releases drivers for the OS too. Modern hardware is supported. For *cutting edge hardware*, #Linux may be the better bet here. It's a little slower to adopt cutting edge gear because it is focused on stability and elegant solutions, not trend-chasing.

FreeBSD is an excellent OS to learn. It runs beautifully and it's more coherent and better designed. Documentation is *solid*.

Oh my, the modern web is so bloated/overloaded.
My Thinkpad x260 (Yoga) is dying while playing a Youtube video... let alone dropping a lot of frames.
I know, the CPU is older (i5-6200U) but come on - this is crazy.

I've set the notebook up to play around with #FreeBSD on the desktop some more. Running #Xfce currently and having some dev stuff installed.
#FreeBSD handles the notebook like a champ, everything works... sadly that is not the same for using the web with a modern browser.
720p playbook loads up the CPU at a constant 50/60%.
Well, at least surfing the web is kinda ok... but not great tbh.

Times really have changed... for the worse in some aspects.
I still remember surfing the web back than with a tiny AMD single core CPU - which was more then enough.
