Alright, so just a little thing since I'm a curious creature! Why has voice chat been going down so much these days? It still seems to be pretty prevalent in the blind community for obvious reasons, but everywhere else I see it seems that creatures would rather text than talk. It kinda makes me sad, ya know. I just feel like it's so hard to make a connection over text alone. How can you truly understand how someone feels when you cannot get any indication of how they feel other than what they say. I am not accusing anyone of lying or anything, but sometimes we don't know how to express something, and the voice can tell a lot more than I think a lot of creatures realize. So I'm wondering what other creatures have to say about this. Why do y'all think this is? Also, if any creatures are like me and prefer to talk rather than text, I am always open, feel free to reach out anyway you can find me. #Telephone set #BritishTelecom 8746 now with replaced 21A microphone insert, working correctly with #Grandstream #HT802 v2 ATA linked to #FreePBX I built on cloud VPS - accepts both #MF (tone) and #LoopDisconnect #dialling (although dialling a full UK mobile number is quite a long process and I had to make sure the timer was at least 4 seconds (or the digits get sent to register before you've dialled any 0 and call fails due to wrong number being sent to #PBX !)
Ring voltage (set to 55V RMS) is strong enough to ring the 4k bell in 8746
So currently this corner of the office looks like its back in 1980s 😁

Protip: if you are connecting older #telephones (1980s/1990s) with #BritishTelecom plug to #VOIP via an #ATA (either standalone or that built into your router), beware that many RJ11 to BT socket adaptors now lack the ringing capacitor for the bell wire - some #telephone sets won't ring without it!
If you have a spare #ADSL filter this contains the capacitor and can be used to get your #phone to ring (plug it into BT socket from the ATA and telephone into the BT socket on the filter)

As I wrote before (https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/@evgandr/115912395421390028) I tried to use TURN server for communication with my relatives, but failed to setup secure enough solution. So, I decided to try an old and reliable solution — Asterisk. With the help of a book "Asterisk: The Definitive Guide" from J.V. Meggelen & R. Bryant & L. Madsen, of course.
First, I was forced to build the asterisk package by myself (from ports, ofc), since the binary version from NetBSD repository compiled with the all DB support, except my favourite PostgreSQL database.
By the way, adding users and writing dialplan with the help of aforementioned book was not so hard as I expected 
. Same for network setup. Since, I'm using PJSIP I just opened SIPS port and a range of UDP ports for RTP protocol on the my firewall. Despite, my home network hidden behind NAT on the router, there are no big problems with networking — end-user devices and an Asterisk server connected with use of simple star topology.
Surpisingly, the quality of the voice call is excellent comparing with service, provided by local cellular network operators. I suppose, that the secret in used codecs, or it is because there are not so much users (only 2) of my service.
Few days ago I successfully configured #coturn to have a TURN/STUN server for in-family calls. But … looks like bots or some bad guys constantly trying to connect to my TURN server to use it for something 😒
Of course, it is impossible, since anonymous access or any other access without right key is impossible. But, there are no IPs of attackers in the log file, even wth "Verbose" directive — only my local and public IPs and my server's hostname 
Maybe, there is some way to force coturn to display IP addresses of connected clients, so I could ban them all with fail2ban?

I'm outside China, need to speak (voice calls, texts) with someone inside China. Until now, used #WeChat, but now it says our versions are incompatible for voice calls, & neither of us can update WeChat.
(Online info I can find is several years old.)
