Truthout

War Criminal Dick Cheney Dead at 84, With Blood of Millions on His Hands

Cheney’s legacy more than outlives him; he reshaped the very structures of war and authoritarianism at home and abroad.

@aral his legacy: #Cheney was used as the poster child in this #TED talk about how to spot a liar https://www.ted.com/talks/pamela_meyer_how_to_spot_a_liar

Presumably when Berkett says "they" she's referring to DataFarmers, as illustrated in The Social Dilemma. But it did make me stop and wonder, to what degree are fediverse apps inadvertently mirroring this relentless emotional activation, and other harmful patterns implicit in the DataFarms we're aiming to replace?

Maybe as well as accessibility - or as part of it - we need to be emphasing emotional wellness in our app designs? Eg asking whether infinite scroll is a sensible default.

Kathryn Berkett gave a talk on 'Neuroscience of Device Zombies' at TEDxTauranga;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrOddAuNau8

It was excluded from the library of TEDX talks on the official TED website, which tells you everything you need to know about their biases.

"The way I think of an oligarchy is of a group of powerful people kind of acting in unison."

Dude doesn't know the difference between an oligarchy and a cartel.

BTW There's a reason I refer to Orange Stalin by that title. It's not a hyperbolic attack line. It's a constant reminder of the kind of political operator he is, and the kind of régime he wants to run.

"So Trump, he calls the press 'the enemies of the people', and he probably doesn't even know that he's quoting Stalin."

I wonder if Winston Peters, Shame Jones and Rimmer realise they're paraphrasing Stalin when they launch attacks from their bully's pulpit on fact-checking journalists, and the organisations they work for?

EDIT: Overall it's a good talk and I agree with the practical proposals, but ...

Well this is disappointing. Lessig's 2024 TED talk not only frames generative models as artificial minds using instrumental rationality, but presents them as being better at using it than humans;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjuYFNR1aWo

Has he really been drinking the Kool-aid, or is he leaning into a popular perception as a means to an end? Either way, not great.
