Hard drive prices are spiking because of "ai." Prices have jumped 46% on average since September.

The 24TB Seagate BarraCuda used to be $239 on sale, but it's now sitting at $500. "AI" training needs massive amounts of data storage, and manufacturers are shifting production toward enterprise drives for data centers, leaving regular buyers paying more than they should have to.

#Selfhosting might make your whole relationship with the #fediverse feel a lot better. If you use one of the mastodon dedicated hosts they do all the management for you which is nice since mastodon is relatively big and complicated. The other masto-based forks and the completely different platforms that interoperate may also be interesting to consider. I believe no matter which #selfhosted option you choose it can be fun and can feel very empowering
