Another amazing aurora lit of the southern hemisphere last night, caused by the strongest solar storm in 20 years.
Hobart, Tasmania was treated to a beautiful display.

Hobart, Tasmania was treated to a beautiful display.
While walking at Lake St Clair National Park, we saw masses of coral lichen just covering ground areas. Apparently, it thrives on ground where dead or dying buttongrass can be found.
We were disappointed to miss the buttongrass but thrilled to see so much lichen.
My chess in 2026:
First, the Australian Junior Championship starts tomorrow in Canberra at St Edmunds College. I won't be in Canberra, but will be working with many Tasmanian juniors who are playing.
I have also dumped chess dot com, and am moving fully to lichess.org. They had a question to answer about why I have decided to leave, and my response was "I don't want to buy American products". Of course, I might rejoin later if the USA comes out of this Orwellian freakishness, but then again, I doubt it.
I will play in a tournament in Hobart but I am debating whether to stop playing internationally rated chess as I have a lot of issues with the current International chess federation. I'm loathe to do this, as I believe that the organisation is fine for running chess, but the personnel in charge are toxic at the moment. I'll have about a month to debate before the Tasmanian Championships happen, here in Launceston.

I tried to coincide my trip to the Tessellated Pavement with low tide, to get the best access to the rocks. It was a very low tide, which made nearby Dunalley Bay look pretty stunning. This was going to be my silent Sunday picture, but my feed could do with some quieting at the moment.

Could have sworn I had a joey on board. Where on earth has he gone?β

There isn't much good environmental news, so this was a pleasant Sunday morning wake up.

As it's World Wombat Day, here's my best ever photo taken at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, January 2024. Mum and Baby Wombat.
