@brainofdane I’m curious of any recommendations you might get as well. I can’t quite find a style of band I’m totally happy with to the point I’ve thought about ~just~ learning how to make my own neofox_laugh_sweat

@micahilbery I've thought about making my own as well! 😅

It doesn't seem like I stirred up any interest on my post, though. The #watch hashtag doesn't appear to really be about watches, but I was expecting there to be a niche crowd here that could help. At the very least, I want to avoid buying a mass-market strap from a big box store or Amazon.

TIL that the automatic winding mechanism of analog watches is called
Automatic Quartz. It is a wonderful intricate system, and I love the delicacy, yet robustness, of the implementation in watches, which can last way more than five decades

Don't let the name fool you it's not fully automatic.
Your wrist needs to shake the watch, sometimes every few weeks, sometimes every few months, because energy needs to be put in the device before it can be radiated through the whole watch. So You charge it with Potential Energy. The system creates rotational speed which can go all the way up to 100,000 RPMs this is coupled with a generator which is coupled to a set of slow discharging capacitors that electricity Powers your beautiful analog watch

The image shows a screenshot of a Wikipedia page about "Automatic quartz," a type of watch movement. At the top, there is a search bar with the text "Search Wikipedia" and a number "15" indicating the number of search results. Below the search bar, there is a close-up image of a watch back, showing the internal components labeled "Pinion," "Gear," and "Pendulum." The watch is made of stainless steel, as indicated by the text "Stainless Steel" on the back. The Wikipedia article explains that automatic quartz movements combine a self-winding rotor mechanism with a piezoelectric quartz crystal to generate electricity, aiming to provide the advantages of quartz without the inconvenience and environmental impact of batteries. The article mentions that several manufacturers employ this technique. At the bottom of the screen, there are navigation options including "Save," "Language," "Find in article," "Theme," and "Contents."

This is something beautiful that I have experienced also with a refrigerator.

My dear Mother bought that refrigerator years before she gave birth to me.

I finally shut the refrigerator down when it had run flawlessly for 60 years, simply because the factory warned in the manual that you have to replace certain parts in an absolute manner even when the fridge still runs.

Built like a tank

That was the motto of factories in that age. The robustness of your watch proves it also

Watches on this level are designed and manufactured to work for decades and decades. It's not uncommon for watches like this to just work 40 years provided that you sent them to an expert watch maker to maintain them

🆕 blog! “Why don't smart watches use USB-C to recharge?”

It looks like the new Google's Pixel 4 watch comes with yet another incompatible change in charging technology. This is a ridiculous situation.

The original Pixel Watch used one type of wireless charging. Then the Pixel Watch 2 & 3 removed wireless charging and swapped to a different charging mechanism. And…

I really like the clear and simple face on my new watch, but the rubbery strap is letting the team down. Anyone got any suggestions for materials or colours that might go well? I was thinking maybe a NATO style strap but maybe that's too utilitarian for this? It's not like it's fancy though. A strong colour could new fun.

I'm just thinking out loud here but I'd be interested in your thoughts as well.
