Dear open registration servers, each day so far this week, I've opened my Mastodon client, only to see slurs, swastikas, and death threat videos of "me" being hanged.
This is the Nazi bar problem. They're standing on the curb and your doors are wide open. Sure, you're kicking them out after they walk in and punch a few customers, but is that really how you want your bar to be known? As the place that apologizes *after* the Nazi assaults you?
With the current US election results rolling in, it looks like we're in for another predictable wave of butthurt GravySeals aching to own the libs in a sad attempt to bring meaning to their poor little wannabe white power lives.
It's time to close registrations and step up moderation to protect the communities you helped grow.
Racism is chasing Black folx off Fedi.
Queerphobia is chasing LGBTQ+ folx off Fedi.
Sexism is chasing women off Fedi.

And it's not like people and espechally businesses are unwilling to pay for good tools, cuz not only is HootSuite still around, but @tapbots, who made the excellent TweetBot nowadays make @ivory, an excellent #ActivityPub client with focus on #Mastodon that people are willing to pay a #subscription for!
Like: There's not much of a technical reason something similar to @zulip 's #TUI - based client could exit.
If people can build #bots for shite like #discord, #Telegram, etc. then why not make an actually good client ???
... and then it goes exactly where I expected, but with a frankly surprising level of candour;

One word; Gloriavale. This is exactly how they operate.
Again with the "Nazi bar" trope.
This is a sensible strategy for a very specific situation. It's a business, with an owner and staff. It's an-person situation. It's a socialising space, intended for people letting off steam. It serves highly poisonous beverages which temporarily (and then permanently) make people brain-damaged.
People often extrapolate from this to a web forum or chat room, or even more so a whole decentralised network. They clearly have no idea how silly this looks.

The site has gone from a fairly benign job-site to a social media enterprise that actively encourages, promotes and rewards open racism, gender & sexuality hate, billionaire worship, and outright worker abuse.
I didn't like it when it was a battle of the influencers for more and more likes; I don't like it now that it's become a full-on Nazi bar.
As the saying goes: "If there’s a Nazi at the table and ten other people sitting there talking to him, you got a table with eleven Nazis."
