In these situations Briar messenger https://briarproject.org is better because they have mesh networking using bluetooth and or wifi which can allow a crowd to communicate even when theres no internet
Meshtastic does something similar but requires custom lora radio nodes to have already been placed nearby

Although this is being portrayed as "social media", recall that the definition is *much* broader than that:
You could not message your children on Signal, or your own home XMPP service.
They could not lawfully contribute to, perhaps even read, a wiki.
No shared calendars with family.
And so on.

@ruari @FediThing Definitely a bit of a vanity project when his name is in the description of the product. He definitely could have just given $$$ to Briar to hire some people to build out an iOS version and help maintain.
@matt @ruari @FediThing Completely agree. Though I've been waiting for store and forward and multi-hop message relay on @briar for a while. I wonder how well Bitchat solves that, and if it can be an inspiration for the #Briar developers.

Or every node in a briar mesh? Or r group moderators liable instead?
Bitchat, Jack Dorseys neuer Messenger, will Bluetooth-Chats ohne Internet und zentrale Server ermöglichen – verschlüsselt, anonym, dezentral. Klingt innovativ, ist aber längst nicht neu: Briar macht das seit Jahren, stabil und quelloffen. Der Hype um Bitchat wirkt eher wie ein PR-Vehikel.
