A Free Code grant-making body for Aotearoa would aim to provide a fulltime living for developers (or part-time where that works better for them), for a period of months. Allowing them to complete a pre-planned piece of work as described in the grant application, as with NlNet grants.

The grants were intended to help schools hire more #counselors, #psychologists & #SocialWorkers, & focus on rural & underserved areas. Success rate for the #EU Postdoctoral #grants MCSA is now lower (10%) than for #ERC starting grants (12%), and even lower for the ERC advance grants (8%). The UK funding not much better, UKRI grants at 18%, down from a 36% back in 2017.

And I'm expected to get the same amount of funding that people 10 or 15 years ago if I want to keep my job... What a mess.

The #shutdown is the first since Jan 2019, & the 4th of #Trump’s 2 terms. Admin ofcls this time, though, have signaled plans to use the closed agencies as a way to vastly reshape the #FederalGovernment & consolidate #power under the presidency.
#OMB dir #RussVought ordered agencies to consider #MassFirings rather than #furloughs.​ His instructions to agencies include guidance on rewriting #regulations surrounding federal #grants & challenging #Congress’s constitutional #power over spending.

The admin has already terminated thousands of #research #grants at agencies like the #NSF & #NIH, including on topics like transgender health, vaccine hesitancy, misinformation & diversity, equity & inclusion.

The order could affect emergency relief grants doled out by #FEMA, #PublicSafety initiatives funded by the #DOJ & #PublicHealth efforts supported by the #CDC. Experts say the order is likely to be challenged in court.

It also requires agencies to make it so that current & future federal grants can be terminated at any time—including during the grant period itself.
